Set in Stornoway and only 2.1 km from Tràigh Thunga Beach, The Gallafield, Self Catering Bungalow, Stornoway offers accommodation with garden views, free WiFi and free private parking. The Gallafield looks good on the website, but is even better in reality. The living area with its high ceiling and its windows feels spacious and light. Four people would easily be comfortable; for the two of us it was perfect. The property is very clean, has lots of storage space, good sized beds, plenty of kitchen equipment and two excellent showers. The location was ideal for us - just outside the centre of Stornoway and it was easy to communicate with Rhona, our host. We stayed there for a week and were sorry to leave.

Book your meals in Stornoway in advance, busy even on a Tuesday. Also make sure you don't try to pack too many activities into one day, if using local buses. They can be few and far between, although they arrived as per timetables. Boatshed good place to eat and drink. Thai cafe also nice food but no alcohol licence, so take your own bottle.
Stornoway is a hidden gem in the Outer Hebrides. We stayed at Lew's Castle, (beautiful property), and we explored some of the island. If I planned the trip again, I'd have added a few more days here, (we did 3, would have enjoyed at least 2 more). The standing stones, the beaches, the people - all amazing! Our only problem was not making dinner reservations the first day we were there. Cruise ships now stop there, so reservations are a must when they are in town. Make time to enjoy the beautiful beaches here, they are special!
Sandwick was pretty quiet but it was just outside of Stornoway which was good enough for us as the property was nice and cosy. Most of the sights we went to see was out with sandwick, more stornoway and further afield. So I’m not reviewing sandwick. The property location was fine for us to travel to and from what we wanted to see
Stunning part of the world. So much more to see than we had time for, a week would have been amazing! Beckett's do a fab breakfast, not many other places open before 9am. Some fab wee gift shops, especially enjoyed the Art Gallery, The Christian Bookshop, The Baltic Bookshop, Hebridean Tweed and Delights.
This review is more about Lewis and Harris, Sandwick is a small suburb of Stornaway. It has an interesting memorial to HMS Iolaire. We spent 4 nights on the island. Although the weather was pretty awful, the island is lovely and we spent a fair bit of time touring Lewis and Harris. The Butt of Lewis is nice and there is a lovely walk to Eoropie bay with lovely sandy beach. We are interested in birds and found Red necked Phalorope, GND, Red throated Diver, Golden Eagle, Guillemots, Fulmars etc. Take the drive across Pentland Road it is lovely and good for birds. Sadly we didn't really have raptor weather (lots of rain). Stornaway is a bit limited - if you want to dine out book well ahead as there aren't many places and they fill up quickly. We enjoyed the Boatshed at the Royal Hotel for dinner. EVERYTHING closes on Sunday (including most of the petrol stations so beware).
Stornoway is a compact town, with good local pubs and restaurants. Lews Castle and its grounds and museum is well worth a visit. I also went to a folk music concert at the An Lanntair theatre which was excellent (I also enjoyed a pre- show meal there in its Thai Cafe). The whole island of Lewis & Harris is stunning and magical.
