A 9min drive from Invercargill it was the right choice for us. We found the cabin & facilities excellent. Invercargill was extremely underwhelming for us so we're so glad we chose to stay close to the beach which was very cool! There is a 4 square, a cafe/restaurant very close to the accommodation
We were lucky arriving during the annual Burt Monro Challenge - a Mecca for bikers like me!! Transport museum interesting if you like historic trucks, but the E Hayes hardware store is something else!!!! The Queen Elizabeth gardens are lovely.
The historic buildings. Friendly shop assistants. Very easy to drive around. The historic Invercargill Club in 32 Don Street is well worth a visit for adults without children for a drink and a meal. Beverley Small, the bubbly general manager, and the other members will welcome you there wholeheartedly, once and if a member has kindly signed you in. A relaxed smart casual dress code normally applies. Do visit the Lookout in Bluff at the southern end of the N1 road for a magnificent view on a fine day.
We experienced the most stunning weather in Invercargill and spend the afternoon in the fabulous Queens Park. What an asset to the city. We ate at the cafe there and enjoyed all the gardens and the wonderful new Tuatara Space. We walked to town for a spot of shopping followed by drinks at the newest hotel. We returned there later for dinner and brunch the next morning before flying to Stewart Island.
We had gone to the Oyster Festival in Bluff on Saturday and decided to stay Sunday as well so we could visit Riverton and Oreti Beach. We enjoyed Queens Garden and visiting the animals who were well cared for. I am sure there is plenty more to see in and around Invercargill.
I found Invercargill an interesting place. You wouldn't call it a pulsing metropolis but it is very pleasant. I particularly enjoyed the city's older architecture and it is a good base for exploring further out. The people were very friendly also.
