Having lived in Cairns previously and now return regularly to see family and friends, while there is a lot about the crime there in the media, i have never experienced it myself. It is important to lock your car and be aware of your surroundings and not flash money or personal wealth around, but i dont think this problem is any worse then anywhere else. The climate is great, and even if it rains, it is warm rain and soon dries. Great opportunitues to see the reef and rainforest. Prices are geared towards tourists so wouldnt do these tours too often, but for a lifetime experience, they are good.Guest review byDianneAustralia - 10.0

Cairns is an amazing place to visit. Weather was great and we were able to attend a conference as well as explore Cairns and surroundings including a trip to Port Douglas, Train trip to the mountain and swimming at popular beach and swimming place in Palm Cove. There really isn’t much to see in downtown Cairns.
There really isn’t much to see in downtown Cairns. To enjoy it, you have to go out to the islands, but this always requires paying a high price, and there aren’t many options in terms of timing. I would instead recommend staying briefly at a resort on one of the islands and then returning. Kuranda and the other rainforests were more developed as tourist attractions than I expected.
