    A small town with a bit to experience. The tram ride, WWII museum in an old water tower, car museum and whale/seafearing museum on the info centre. Great casual walking areas as facilities in the township. The free guided tour of the garnet colony was fantastic too.

    Portland has a variety of things to do in the area and around town. The Gannet Colony was fabulous to see, as was the port area and lee breakwater. I enjoyed the national parks in the area - especially the aboriginal cultural tour at Tae Rak Aquaculture Centre at Budj Bim World Heritage Area. Bonus - the seafood from the Seafood Outlet at the port was fabulous!

    The Cable Tram is a “must do” when visiting Portland;

    The Cable Tram is a “must do” when visiting Portland; it is a unique journey along the coast with knowledgeable commentary from friendly locals (who volunteer at the museum) along the way. You can sit inside the carriage or outside where you get the true experience of travel. The Pulambeet All Abilities Playspace will help your children use up their excess energy; it has a lot of fun adventures for them to utilise and they may even see the Cable Tram ramble by! Cape Nelson Lighthouse is a short drive away with the unique blue waters splashing onto the rocks. Picnic Hill Reserve has lots of vegetation pertaining to the area, a lookout for some beautiful views, and, if you’re really lucky, you may be able to see a koala up close! The Royal Hotel has a great menu of quality food and caters for all tastes. Family oriented (best kid’s meal deals around - even includes an activity pack to keep them occupied) and the staff are super friendly and efficient. Highly recommend. Portland Fish’N’Chips (in Blackwood Court) are fabulous too - their food is delicious, they are extremely customer orientated and very welcoming … even bringing our order out to our car so we didn’t have to wait inside. The Noodle Canteen on the other hand was a very disappointing experience. Staff were rude and dismissive, so much so, that we ended up walking out and going elsewhere because after waiting over 10 minutes to even be acknowledged, one dish we were interested in ordering was no longer available (but the sign had not been removed) and when we went to place our order, we were totally ignored … we tried again but were again dismissed so left. Even our 7 year old grandson commented on the rudeness and said he didn’t want to go back; for the record, we didn’t and nor would we again … poor service indeed!

    Interesting and historic port.

    Interesting and historic port. We love the old stone buildings, and the foreshores are beautifully maintained. Our favourite places were on the fishing wharf or a drive out along the sea wall. It's easy to get around Portland and we were able to buy everything we needed for our short 5-day stay from either Woolies or IGA. Plenty of little cafes and places for a coffee. We didn't find a good restaurant serving fresh, local seafood which was disappointing. One Chinese restaurant was recommended to us. One of the dishes we ordered was a combination seafood, but no fresh seafood only frozen and with great chunks of cauliflower. Generally, the food was very disappointing. Maccas drive-through was gold star and for a fraction of the cost.

    Melaleuca motel is reasonably priced and extremely well located close to restaurants and the harbourside. The queen room is spacious, has a comfortable bed, a couch, a table for two and a desk. Crockery and cutlery are provided as well as a microwave. Although there is no sink in the kitchenette, the hosts are happy to take your used dishes and supply you with clean ones, a great service in my opinion. The shower was excellent. The hosts are kind and obliging, and have done much to make this slightly elderly motel comfortable.

    What a gem of a find, gorgeous old house and conveniently located to everything. Our host Roger was amazing and the amenities were excellent. The room was spacious and the bed was beautiful and extremely comfortable. The extra touches including providing beer and wine and soft drinks and breakfast made it even better value for money. And the cooked breakfast was amazing. I cannot speak highly enough of this place and recommend anyone thinking of visiting Portland to use Lorelei B & B as a stop over.

    Exceptionally comfortable house with all the facilities you could want. New build, really well put together, secure, but with those lovely lived-in vibes that make you feel at home. Great location - really quiet cul de sac just across the road from the foreshore - but with an easy walk into town. Not as cheap as my normal option in Portland, but absolutely worth it and we will definitely be back.

    We caught the bus to Portland to walk the Great South West Walk and Victoria House was very convenient to the bus station, pub, supermarkets, cafes and bakery. Close to the information centre and a short walk to everywhere you needed to go. Great service from Mandy. Lovely to sit by the open fire at night and have a free sherry with some fruit cake. Lovely place to stay.
