Alpine Resort and Large Glaciers
Grindelwald lies at more than 1000 metres above sea level, offering top-class ski slopes and an imposing Alpine landscape. It is located in the canton of Bern, in the Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Aletsch is the largest glacier to be found in the Alps.
Although evidence shows humans have been present in the region for thousands of years, the first long-lasting settlements date back to the Middle Age. For a long period, the destiny of the village was attached to the influence of the Interlaken Abbey, until the times of the Protestant Reformation.
Tourist activity begun in the 18th century, bringing new life and wealth to the village. During the second half of the 19th century, roads and railway lines were developed, allowing a constant influx of visitors. We stayed for 3-1/2 days mostly hiking in the area in mid-August. Many tourists but manageable. Strongly, strongly suggest buying the Jungfrau Pass so you can access any trains, buses, and cable cars in the entire area. It makes it so easy to get around Grindelwald, Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen, Murren, Wengen, First, and the Eiger. We should have booked a 5 day stay as there were some other hikes and attractions we wanted to take and see. Definitely go to Glacier Canyon and walk it to the end, but take warm clothes as the canyon is quite cool even in August due to the glacial runoff. And for sure visit the base of the Eiger. Grindelwald is like a Swiss Fairytale. All the wonderful Swiss Chalets, the incomparable alps, the charming Swiss people. Grindelwald is definitely a tourist town with shops selling all the Swiss trinkets, but that's part of the charm.
