The city itself of Kaiserslautern is teeming with life downtown, and it's got plenty to do for fun and delicious food within a 15 minute walk from most hotels. Just don't cheap out on where you stay or you can get seriously jipped. We ate the best sushi I've had in Germany and visited the japanese garden. Very cool experience. The town is beautiful, walkable, safe - with many fascinating shops, restaurants and outdoor cafes, public parks, delicious bakeries, and some impressive things for tourists to visit - two museums each of which was excellent (one had a touring exhibit of an internationally famous modern artist, the other is a local history museum which is fascinating), the Japanese garden, the synagogue memorial - which was beautifully thought out, understated, and sensitive - and because Kaiserslautern is so close to Ramstein, everyone in the shops and restaurants speaks English and they understand, and are kind to, confused American tourists! Everyone I met was courteous, helpful, friendly. Ample parking and the room was very generous in size, although in an outbuilding away from the main part of the hotel, which wouldn't be so great if the weather was bad. We ate in the restaurant in the evening, not the cheapest but the food was good. There was some kind of conference going on when we were there so it was quite busy.
