Beyond Oktoberfest

Renowned for its stunning architecture and the world’s largest fair, Oktoberfest, Munich needs little introduction. Its vibrant cultural scene, great shopping and fantastic museums speak for themselves.

Munich has something for everyone: from historic palaces and castles, to stunning royal avenues to world class galleries and museums. Don't miss the new city hall in the heart of Marienplatz or the former residence of the Bavarian kings, the Residenz. Munich is also home to the world’s most famous beer hall, the Hofbräuhaus.

For great shopping, Karlsplatz is another commercial wonderland square that takes up much of the city centre and the upscale area around Maximilianstrasse. Munich is famous for its food too, so make sure you try the local Weißwurst, Leberkässemmeln and other popular pork dishes.

Thanks to efficient S-Bahn train, getting to the city centre from Germany’s second busiest airport, Munich International Airport is quick and easy. Whether you’re looking for luxury hotels, youth hostels or comfortable apartments, Booking.com has the perfect accommodation for your Munich visit.

    Clean lively and friendly city.

Clean lively and friendly city. Museums are absolutely fantastic. Lots of history. The food is ok but slightly expensive ( And I come from London!) The markets are really great. I travelled around mainly by Lime Bike which was easy and great fun with lots of cycleways. There are some great deals on bus/train and museum packages. Only 75 minutes from breathtaking hiking in the beautiful German Alps too!

I was limited to travelling on foot or bicycle from our hotel but what I saw of Munich did not inspire me as much as other towns on the Romantic Road which had more natural beauty and interesting architecture. The centre of the old town was interesting and that was our highlight with the three days we had. I would have liked to do a trip to Neuschwanstein Castle but the weather (rain predicted) & the prospect of so many tourists deterred us. Not all restaurants had a credit card facility - annoying if you are short of local cash.

I would start with the very good public transportation.

I would start with the very good public transportation. Then it is always something interesting that is happening in the city. This time it was IAA MOBILITY Munich 2025. Around Marienplatz there are a lot of restaurants with Bavarian specialties additionally to the famous Bavarian beer. For sure Englische Garten also deserves a visit. Also BMW World deserves to pay a visit.

A beautiful city with rich history and a wonderful vibe.

A beautiful city with rich history and a wonderful vibe. Great traditional food and of course off the charts BEER! The city is relatively easy to navigate and is accessible by car, airport and train. See the Glockenspiel in the Marienplatz plaza. The Residenz palace was breathtaking and amazing. Visit the old churches: Frauenkirche, Asamkirche, and many others. A bit of a long walk (you can Uber or Taxi) is the Englischer Gardens - very beautiful and yes, a beer garden there!

    Munich is beautiful.

Munich is beautiful. Wide tree lined streets and avenues, gives an 'open' feel. VERY CLEAN (coming from S. Cyprus this is so much appreciated) as are the greenery, parks, lovely buildings everywhere. The people were all friendly, polite and helpful. Great choice of quality foods in restaurants, cafes in all price ranges. Thoroughly recommend the Hop on Hop Off bus tour/s.
