Loved the City of Avignon and on our boat to the Popes Palace there was a supplementary exhibition of Jean-Michel Orthoniel exhibition which is amazing. On until January so would highly recommend. Avignon is a city best explored by walking. The old town is lively, specially at night with plenty of restaurants to choose from. We had a car so we took day trips to surrounding towns in Provence before leaving Avignon to head up to Lyon, then Amboise, then Paris. I wish we had devoted more time to exploring Avignon itself without driving somewhere else every day. We just loved the city.
We just loved the city. There was plenty to do and see and the restaurants and bars were all really good. We wanted to visit the Pont du Gard and took the local bus to get there and back. We visited in July during the French Theater festival.
We visited in July during the French Theater festival. It was a little too busy for our liking, but if you like French theater, it's a great time to be there. We took a tour of the Pope's palace, which is amazing and well worth visiting. We also did a half day tour of the lavender fields, which are about an hour away. Only about 15 minutes walk over the bridge into the old town, and only about a 5 minute walk to a bakery. There’s also a food van down near the bakery each evening with great hamburgers and it’s incredibly cheap and you sit right by the river with incredible views.
