Out of a Fairytale
Most visitors to Carcassonne come here for one thing: to see its fairytale, UNESCO World Heritage-listed castle sitting majestically on a hill east of the city.
Spectacularly lit at night, this Cité is a restored medieval fortress with 52 towers, 2 outer walls covering almost 2 miles, and a drawbridge providing access to a keep. Twice daily there are medieval jousting displays between the walls. This intriguing castle has enchanted so many that it has appeared in novels, films and even spawned a board game.
Some Carcassonne hotels, bars and restaurants can be found in the Cité but the majority are in the Ville Basse below. The stone Old Bridge, also lit at night, links it to the city centre over the Aude River.
Central Carcassonne also has its own sights including the fine art museum and the cathedral with its impressive stained-glass windows. But its best feature is the South of France way of life, with relaxed bars and pavement cafes, some serving the local speciality – cassoulet. Other slow-paced attractions include boat trips along the Canal du Midi and visiting villages like Minerve in the surrounding hills.
Served by national and low cost carriers, Carcassonne Airport is a mere 3 miles out of the city centre.

Fascinating history and the views and architecture were astonishing. We took a guided tour and would recommend that strongly - so much information and fascinating stories. We tried to find a really good dinner and the first two nights were disappointing (or at best ordinary) - steak was tough one night and the duck was tough on another. But we live in France, so we weren't there for the gastronomy, so no matter. Our third night we played safe with an Italian Pizza and it was a relief to get what we ordered and expected. Though the weather wasn’t the best we found enough to see and do in the 4 days we were there. The castle was very impressive and we had a guided tour of it. The traffic wasn’t too bad and the drivers were very courteous. In fact the French in this city were friendlier than in more frequented areas like Nice or Cannes. While there we used a pub called The Celts and I would thoroughly recommend it. The visit to the castle was amazing inside and out. A short walk into the Bastide (New Cite) is lovely finding numerous cafes, shops and cathedrals. Some great go to opportunities! Useful to know that some restaurants close on a Wednesday so you can plan were to eat.Great contrast between the old and new cite.Our favourite place to eat lunch was Au Petit Brunch. Carcassonne is a beautiful city with lots of fabulous restaurants and lively bars as well as the historical epicentre inside the castle walls (Citè) itself which was my favourite part! We went as couples but there was alot of families there also both young children with options for them too.
