A Picturesque River City

Lyon is a gastronomic centre with a pretty architectural façade ranging from antiquity to modern day. Place Bellecour is centrally located between the Saône and Rhône Rivers in the 2nd arrondissement and opens out into major shopping streets.

    Great place for a long weekend. Food is amazing - but be warned Lyonnaise cooking is pretty rich so a few days of it will definitely impact you. Old town and city centre has great architecture and spaces

    Lyon is a city of culinary.

    Lyon is a city of culinary. You may stay there for one week and never get tired of restaurants and cafes of high quality. Citizens of Lyon are also young and energetic, and you can feel same energy during your visit. Highly recommended for 2 - 3 day holidays.

    There is an extensive construction program ripping up...

    There is an extensive construction program ripping up footpaths to install fancy tiles and flower boxes. No doubt this will be good when finished but it is a misery to try to navigate around unsealed (and unfamiliar) roads with only some French signs and guesswork to help. Why so much area had to be ripped up when replacement was/is largely non-existent is a serious question. I would not visit until this work is completed.

    The hotel is great from when you walk in clean organised and efficient, we only stopped one night as we had travelled from Spain by train and had an early departure the next morning, it is perfectly positioned next door . The staff are obliging, the rooms are spacious and clean and the beds are super comfy. My only negative comment for us would be that there were no vegan options on the menu in the hotel but the staff were very helpful in adapting a meal for us .

    A beautiful and relaxed city. The old town is wonderful with its cobbled streets and history. Everyone was graceful with our lack of French. Despite protests, we felt very safe in the city both night and day. Great shopping too.

    I arrived on a Sunday and left the following Saturday so...

    I arrived on a Sunday and left the following Saturday so spent almost a week in Lyon. I bought a Lyon Card that was valid for four days and used it to gain free entrance to several museums and also used it extensively on busses, trams and the métro. Lyon has an excellent public transport system which is clean, reliable and safe. Fantastic choice of restaurants in the city - but you expect nothing less in France’s gastronomic capital! VERY difficult to find a “tabac” that sold postage stamps for outside France (yes, I’m of an older generation that still sends postcards). Seek out the “traboules” but PLEASE respect the notices asking you to be silent - remember that people live in the buildings. Take a river cruise, indulge yourself with some silk products and enjoy this fascinating city. I can’ wait for the Textile Museum to re-open after several years of renovations - I’ll definitely plan a second visit!

    Hôtel des Célestins was exactly as we hoped – clean, comfortable, friendly and full of character. The staff could not have been more helpful or more accommodating and the location was perfect, just a few minutes’ walk from Bellecour Metro station and its easy access to the airport. We had a fantastic view of the nearby Théâtre des Célestins, as well as the famous Basilica of Notre Dame of Fourvière, perched on its hilltop above the city. Breakfast was very good and the coffee excellent.

    The location is very handy for the main train station and tram to the airport, with lots of buses nearby as well as a bike hire docking station immediately outside the hotel. Staff were helpful and efficient. It was good value for money, especially with the relatively generous check in and check out times. The AC also worked well during a heatwave. I can't speak to the breakfast as we wanted to explore Lyon's food scene.

    The College Hotel was lovely. Welcomed by very friendly staff. The location in the old town was fantastic and walking distance to everything The room was clean, spacious and comfortable The cocktail bar next to the hotel was nice to have after busy day The hotel was a former school with lots of memories of those days still about which was interesting It made our stay in Lyon very enjoyable Thank you

    Great location - across the road from where the tram from the airport drops you off and also right next door to the station, so great if you're using Lyon as stop on a bigger France tour as I was. From there, it delivers exactly what you expect, nothing amazing but also no obvious downsides.
