This was a nice stop over place on our trip.
This was a nice stop over place on our trip. The room and the hosts were really nice. Breakfast was good and there was free parking. We went into town to look at the old city and have dinner. The location is about a 15 minute drive to the old Gallo-Roman walled city of Le Mans which is quaint with numerous timbered buildings and narrow winding streets. The Cathedral of St Julien is huge with numerous beautiful stained-glass windows, one of which is the oldest in the world. In the past the town was abandoned but in recent years was extensively restored and is frequently used as a film set for epic films, eg Cyrano de Bergerac. As parking is limited in the old town, it is wise to park in one of the several very large free car parks by the river. From here the best view of the Gallo-Roman walls and towers surrounding the town can be seen. There is a short climb up a series of steps to the old town which is well worth a visit. Best to visit during the week because very little is open on a Sunday, including places to eat. The Le Mans Country Club at Yvre-l'Eveque is an ideal place to stop for a day or two en route to destinations further south, especially if you like fine food.
