Even though I have a long ancestral history in Bridport and visited many times as a child, I had never been to Axminster. The only thing I knew about it was the carpet manufacturing. I therefore assumed it was rather 'industrial'. However, it is anything but and is absolutely charming. Axminster also has a beautiful station that could be straight out of 'Brief Encounter'. I didn't even know that its name derives from the river Ax and therefore it is the 'minster' town of the Ax river; which leads to the equally charming Axmouth. This latter town even has a tram. There is not much going on in Axminster.

Axminster is an ideal base for exploring Devon.
Axminster is an ideal base for exploring Devon. I chose to arrive by train and found it very easy to get to places on the train or bus. However, be aware that some of the local buses do not operate after 18:00. This really took me by surprise. Taxis are also limited. Chose Axminster as most of the accommodation nearer the coast was fully booked, however, it is only 15 minutes drive into Lyme Regis or you can get the bus instead. Only a small place but there was a Tesco, Post Office and a small market on Thursday mornings. Axminister is a small sized town, there is a reduced choice to eat in the town on Sunday and Monday evenings. From the places I ate at good food and friendly service. There some shops closed down, I expect as an affect of covid reducing visitors over the past few years, hopefully business will start to grow again. Lovely to wake up to the view and be able to open the patio door and sit on the little patio with a nice cuppa. Great location 5 mins from Axminster, 15-20 to Seaton or Lyme Regis, walking distance to Hunters Arms and a little cafe opposite.
