Barnard Castle is set high up on the Pennines, surrounded by wild and beautiful moorland. The town itself is warm and friendly with a good choice of eating places. For those who like history, the ruined castle is always worth seeing; the Bowes Museum, built as a huge french chateau takes a day to look around properly. There is a street market on Wednesdays and lots of artisan shops to enjoy for the rest of the week. Barnard Castle town was a nice place to go for a day trip. lots of cafes and antique type places. We went to do a couple of cycling routes, one of them being the Tees valley railway which was really enjoyable, lots of wild flowers and butterflies and the scenery was stunning. Only thing i would point out is that a lot of the businesses in the surrounding small towns and villages shut on a Tuesday. A lovely town with plenty of independent shops and cafes, so much to do and see nearby. Even just a stroll along the river makes for a pleasant afternoon. Picturesque market town with good choice of shops, cafes and restaurants. If you like Indian food, we recommend the Bengal Merchant Indian restaurant. We also enjoyed the Moments and Rise cafes. There is also a Morrisons supermarket and a Lidl. Both Barnard Castle and the Bowes Museum in Bowes are well worth a visit and there is so much to see in this beautiful part of the world. Main purpose of our visit was to attend a concert at The Whitham. A great venue, intimate, atmospheric and with great live sound. However during the preceding afternoon we browsed the local shops, one of which specialising in books, coffee and records was great! Forgotten the name of it. Great location for exploring the area, about 50 minutes away from Beamish. We stayed in the outbuilding called The Stables, over the road from the main hotel which was exceptional, and you can get parked outside, mostly in the evening when day visitors have gone. The hotel also has its own parking as well. The breakfast was excellent, really good quality, and we had a main meal here as well which was also very good. The dinning room staff and chef were of an excellent standard and we all enjoyed our dinner. The rooms were clean and comfortable, the first floor rooms were bigger and better appointed than those on the second floor. The Morritt is located in a very attractive part of Yorkshire close to Richmond and walking distance to Barnard Castle.
