FAQs about hotels in Chester

A Walk Through History

Featuring half-timbered buildings, almost complete city walls and a wealth of Roman heritage, beautiful Chester sits by the border with Wales.

The southernmost gate of the walls overlooks the River Dee, and the road leading north is one of 4 in the city to follow the original Roman roads. To the east, the Roman Gardens include a reconstructed underfloor heating system.

Nearby Grosvenor Park has remains of a stone Roman amphitheatre, thought to have been built on the world’s largest wooden amphitheatre at the time. Over the river in the suburb of Handbridge is a 2nd-century shrine to Minerva, and an informative display in the Grosvenor Museum provides the background to all this heritage.

In the west is Chester Racecourse and nearby are the medieval castle remains. More medieval buildings line the cobbled city centre streets. Some of these are The Rows, black-and-white timbered buildings housing 2 levels of shops. Other shopping options are the indoor market by the cathedral, and the Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village in Ellesmere Port to the north. The road out there passes Chester Zoo, one of the UK’s best zoos.

Booking.com’s range of Chester accommodation includes hotels with swimming pools, guest houses by the train station and B&Bs with parking near Chester Airport.

Chester is full of history, beautiful buildings plenty of places to sit and relax and take in the atmosphere. The city is compact but never seems over crowded. There are plenty of shops and cafes. The river is not too far away and is well worth a visit and is close to the beautiful park. The city feels safe and is very clean and is very easy to get to via mersey rail from Liverpool ,hence reducing vehicle use.

You know how people are always saying, "You should go to this place or that city"? Why had no one ever said to me, "You should go to Chester"??!!?! It's absolutely delightful! Such a pretty little town and there's something for everyone: history, entertainment, activities, lovely parks and walks along the river. Had the best meal I've ever eaten in my life there too - at the tapas bar called Porta. OMG! Who knew even basic carrots could be made so delicious? The city walls make it really easy to walk around the town too. You should go to Chester!

Hop on off bus was very good value and gives a good idea of what places to check out. Lovely high street and recommend walking the wall. Cathedral was very interesting but we missed the guided tours as they only took place at 11:00am.

Lovely place , nice places to eat, nice pubs , nice shops , get the train to Manchester or Liverpool we got the train to Conwy Castle for the day takes an hour lovely, great zoo, get a hotel in the centre otherwise your paying for a taxi , hotels charge for parking some aren't cheap so if your out of town it works expensive. We also had a drive to the Trafford centre which is very good.

Chester seemed a lot smaller and more compact than York and so we could get around quicker also again not during summer holidays so we could enjoy a more chilled and relaxed break. (A romantic city too, I proposed to my girlfriend on a river trip🥰).

The garden was very tranquil and the location to Chester city centre ,the room was a twin room on first floor no lift so that might be an issue for the less mobile but a lovely quiet location breakfast was fresh and a buffet would of preferred coffee and tea being served to you rather than the drinks being in flask type dispensers which was not hot but staff did replenish when asked just not what you expect of this type of hotel everyone wants a fresh hot tea and coffee staff very friendly and welcoming

The hotel is within walking distance of Chester City Centre and the bus stop for Chester Zoo. The room was clean and spacious and the showers etc worked well. The four poster bed was very comfortable. Breakfast was more than adequate in quantity and quality - we especially liked the scrambled egg and smoked salmon. The coffee was excellent. This is a friendly, family run hotel and the service was excellent. The price was reasonable. We would certainly recommend to others and stay there again ourselves.

Great place to stay very close to the city centre of Chester and only a stones throw walk away from the city walls walk; have stayed here many times! The swimming pool, hot tub, sauna & steam room are a great bonus after a long drive. The rooms have been modernised lately and the beds are really comfortable. There's parking next to the hotel at a reasonable cost. The breakfast is the best part, buffet and lots of it!

Overall, the Chester Grosvenor met my expectations; friendly staff, superb food, good sized rooms and spa facilties too. It's central location makes it easy to explore Chester's famous Rows and roman ruins, on foot. It also has car parking facilities, which is a bonus for a city centre hotel. Will definitely return.
