FAQs about hotels in Durham

Sacred English Heritage

Durham could definitely be one of those towns that appear in fairy tales and stories of kings and knights. Lying on a hilled peninsula formed by the Wear River, the striking cathedral overlooks from the hilltop, surrounded by the castle, palaces and historic buildings. Get transported back in time by the magic of this English jewel, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Though archaeological evidence suggests the area has been inhabited since 2000 BC, the present-day settlement was founded by monks from Lindisfarne in 995, choosing the area as the final resting place of Saint Cuthbert. Symeon of Durham stated once that ‘to see Durham is to see the English Zion, and by doing so one may save oneself a trip to Jerusalem’. Hotels and B&Bs in Durham’s historic centre are a popular choice to enjoy this historic legacy.

Its powerful religious position granted such great honour to the city, that the bishop still holds the rights to a seat in the House of Lords, and to accompany the sovereign at the coronation. During the 19th century and encompassing the industrial revolution, the university was founded, with Durham Castle becoming its first college.

Whether you’re searching for a cottage, a modern hotel, or a cheap hostel, Booking.com offers a wide range of accommodation in the area.

Durham City was a great place to visit.

Durham City was a great place to visit. You can spend half a day in the Cathedral, the rest of the time wandering around the city and river, stopping to eat and drink in the great pubs. If you want to get further afield, drive to Beamish Museum, go up onto the Pennines, Visit Kielder Forest, go the coast (Lindisfarne is worth a visit), Whitby isn't that far away and the drive over the moors is great.

Much of the city is geared towards students but we found at least two good restaurants - the Turkish one and the Italian above it. Beamish was well worth the visit. The first day, we could not gain access to the cathedral because it was matriculation day for the university - but well worth going the second day. Unfortunately, access to the castle is limited to going with a tour on certain days, since it is also a living university college.

The quality of the furnishings and finishing touches are pure luxury. A Lovely hot tub, which was great. Gorgeous thick fluffy towels and dressing gowns. The bed is the best I've ever slept in it was so soft and comfortable yet firm enough to ensure a great night's sleep. The only downside was the steep steps up to the apartment, and the outside area around the hot tub could be made a bit nicer. The decor is both quirky and luxurious. Best apartment I've ever stayed in and situated so near Durham city centre.

the location was ideal - just a very short walk to the city centre. there was plenty of parking. staff were friendly and check-in was straightforward. the room was very clean and comfortable (only downside was that there was no electric socket near the mirror, which is the norm in hotel rooms!!), inc. hairdryer, iron/ironing board, fan. Breakfast was included and although the continental choice wasn't that great, the cooked breakfast was lovely.

Fantastic service, beautifully clean and smart facilities including reception, the gym and the room. Very friendly and helpful staff. And excellent value for money. Location is great - easy access to the city centre and university - and also quick to get into the countryside if you walk the opposite way out of the hotel.
