FAQs about hotels in Exeter

A Host of History

Set around the Exe River, affluent Exeter has played a part in English history from the Roman era to William the Conqueror to the Spanish Armada. Its most impressive structure is the cathedral, begun in the 11th century and boasting the longest stone roof in England.

The surrounding green is a popular picnic spot, and the half-timbered buildings and red-brick façades of the neighbouring High Street house a host of shops. Even more are in the Princesshay and Guildhall shopping centres.

The Guildhall itself is considered England’s oldest municipal building still in use, while nearby Parliament Street is one of the world’s narrowest streets. The remains of 11th-century St Nicholas Priory are now a museum, and there are more red-stone ruins at hilltop Exeter Castle (or Rougemont Castle), built into the Roman walls.

Exeter Central Station is behind the castle, while St Davids Station is nearer the university. The large student population means that the city has good nightlife, and some bars are located by the Quayside, site of Custom House. The river flows past Topsham and Powderham Castle to enter the sea at Exmouth.

To the east are Exeter Airport and the Westpoint Arena exhibition centre, both easily reached from Booking.com’s hotels with spas, cheap apartments and guest houses with parking.

I think we saw the important sights in Exeter during our one night stay. You could stay longer and venture more and further away given parking permits in and out travel, yet for us the closeness to center city and major sights was enough. Highly recommend hotel.

Exeter Cathedral tours and concert at night; Knightshayes Court, A la Ronde, the Museum of Dartmoor Life at Okehampton where Swift Taxis provided tour of five villages on edge of Dartmoor National Park where my ancestors lived and the younger generation emigrated to Australia. Disappointed that church at Ottery St Mary was closed. And would have liked cruise but some cease on 31 August.

We did not spend much time in Exeter but used it as a base to explore Devon. One day, we went north to Exmoor National Park, Ilfracombe and Westward Ho. The next day, we went south to Exmouth, Blackpool Sands and Torquay.

It's a very big city with a lot of history. Lots of eating places and good pubs. A very good central point for visiting coastal resorts and places around Dartmoor. We were a bit disappointed with some of the riverside walks. The traffic system near to the property was grim and difficult to avoid; this might put us off staying in Exeter again.

Have visited Exeter a few times now due to son at Uni. This time ate aten at Pizza Express opposite the catherdal but service is very slow even in quiet times. Was shocked that a glass of wine was £10. There are lots of restaurants to choose nearby.

Exeter is a beautiful city with excellent transport links, restaurants, bars and cafés. It has a beautiful cathedral with lots of history. It is quite hilly so there may be some climbs involved! It is also close to the coast and the harbour area is beautiful. Highly recommended for a city break.

A quirky individual hotel. Warm, friendly owners who were welcoming and provided a relaxed atmosphere. We had a room for three female friends. The third bed was in a small room alongside the twin bedded room and we all shared an en-suite bathroom. Absolutely ideal. The breakfast was fabulous with both a full cooked breakfast and/ or fruit salad, yoghurt, croissants, toast etc. Excellent filter coffee. Hotel located approx 15 min walk from town centre,20 mins from the quay. 5 min walk from Exeter St David train station.

Raffles is a small, friendly, cosy family hotel located less than ten minutes walk from Exeter city centre. It has off-street car parking behind the hotel. It is a few minutes walk from the University's Northcott campus and five minutes' taxi drive from St. David's station. The staff are friendly and helpful and the breakfast was great. The warm bedroom and heavenly bedding made for a very good night's sleep.

There's much to like about St. Andrews Hotel starting with the FREE parking and the proximity to Exeter City Centre with it only taking just over 15 minutes to walk in. The hotel itself is very untypical of an independent city hotel in that it is clearly well maintained and in no way looks tired as many do nowadays.

The hotel was situated about a mile from Exeter St David's and only 5 minutes walk from Exeter St. Thomas station. It was also within a mile of the historic city centre. The bed was very comfortable and there was plenty of room in the walk-in shower.

Great location, just a short walk to Exeter’s town centre, cathedral, and pubs. Easy parking across the road — pay at the hotel and get a discount. Rooms are functional with comfy beds, and staff are friendly. Good value overall.
