I had a great time, lucky with the weather. I had dinner the second night in the Haybarn on site. It was a nice meal and good local beer. We were there for a wedding at the local church but highly satisfied with our choice. The owners are a fantastic couple who made us feel very welcome and told us lots of the local history. We loved the views.
We loved the views. We ate both there and at another secluded pub just down the road. Troutbeck is easy enough to get around but you will need a car to get into Ambleside. If we were in the area again we would stay in The Mortal Man.Guest review byRobertAustralia - 10.0

This hotel is extremely outdated and in need of a complete refurbishment, it is dirty and smells of damp. The staff were pleasant but all very young and there didn't seem to be anyone in charge. The food in the restaurant was over priced and poor quality. £28 for a rib eye steak with chips but the steak was chewy and gristly and the chips were undercooked and hard! The price didn't even include a sauce! It was clear that they knew the room was smelling of damp as they had cheap Reed diffusers and air freshners around to try and cover the smell which made it worse! The only thing good about this place is the stunning view from the bedroom window but even that doesn't warrant the £225 the one night stay cost me! We ate in the pub which was delicious. Staff very welcoming and helpful. The room was clean and well appointed and our dog was welcomed and allowed in all parts of the hotel. Dog toys and blankets are a lovely touch! Continental breakfast was varied and tasty. We will definitely return. The house itself is in a very stunning village with walks from the doorstep and the view from all the rooms is spectacular.
