FAQs about hotels in York

England Through The Ages

Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once allowed access to the city.

Walk the walls for wonderful views towards the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.

A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even have a go at archaeology yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.

Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around 30 minutes’ drive away is Castle Howard, a stately home with over 1000 acres of grounds.

Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there is a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guest houses in York and the outskirts available on Booking.com.

Plenty of car free streets and the City Centre still busy with tourists . York is a great place to visit and there is so much to do. We have stayed at the Camping and Motorhome Club site several times but that site has now become so expensive we NOW prefer to book Hotels. Our favourite is The Moxy Hotel which is very central .

This was our first proper visit to York, so we could not do everything possible on offer. However, we truly enjoyed our long and informative visit to the York Castle Museum with cafe and a shop. York Minster was magnificent, we just didn't have enough time for a tour. Cosy Club was a great place to eat. It was easy to get around the centre of York by bus and shop keepers were friendly.

York is simply stunning!

York is simply stunning! At every turn, you'll find something amazing to marvel at. The pubs are wonderful and the choice of restaurants is also good. High points for us were the Castle Museum and, of course, the Shambles. We stayed for two nights, which just wasn't long enough.

Me and my wife love visiting York it’s a great city full of history and many attractions and things to do. So much to see and there’s food and drink for all budgets available. Would recommend the ghost bus tour for some sightseeing, comedy and history all in 1 tour. This starts and finishes at York train station, where the York tap pub is located this is a nice Victorian bar with a great drink selection. We ate at various places in york ranging from the normal high street places to nice independent cafes/pubs and all were great. Clifford’s tower is a good attraction also with some good views over the city as are the York Walls.

York was so much more than we expected.

York was so much more than we expected. Beautiful and picturesque, from the cobbled streets, old building and the river, plus the autumn leaves just made it an absolutely beautiful place to visit. Discovering the hisrtory, hearing the ghostly tales, visiting the many tourists attractions made the experience one of our favourites, and made us very sad to leave however made us want to come back again and again. Brew and Brownie and Rise were to lovely breakfast or brunch spots we visited, with there friendly staff, outstanding food and both had queues at the door each day where absolute proof that they are very popular and rightly so. The ghost merchants is a must, the staff are outstanding lovely to talk to while queuing and cant do enough for you while inside. The castle museum was another favourite of ours, from the prison dungeons, to walking the victorian cobbled streets, learning about the history of york was made so much fun. Mad Alice ghost tour was another great experince, lead by Lady Peckett, fabulous actress who kept character all through the tour and wad very knowledgeable, made for a great halloween night. The comedy ghost Bus tour lead by Lewis and Driver Bob was another very enjoyable experince, mixing comedy and ghost stories for a more light hearted tour. Final note if your looking for an amazing sunday Roast, look no further than lucia's dont let the fact that its an Italian put you off, we had the sharing sunday roast and it was honestly one of the best meals weve eating, everything cooked perfectly and staff absolutely amazing. Extremely attentive and couldn't do enough for you .

York is the most amazing city.

York is the most amazing city. If you love history, this is the place to come. Vikings, Romans, Anglo-Saxons - it's got it all! Not to mention - chocolate!! Most things are within easy walking distance of each other, and one could really spend a week here and not see everything. Plenty of delicious places to eat - just ensure that you are heading for dinner by 6:00. Any later than that and you will struggle to find a place still serving food - especially the pubs. And if you are a Harry Potter fan, York has many places that refer to, and cater to you. One of the most underrated attractions that we visited was the Merchant Adventurers Guild. A completely wonky building from the 14th century with a fascinating history. Highly recommend. And if you want to immerse yourself in that history, have tea at the Perky Peacock - a small tea room inside of a 13th century guard tower along the city walls! And of course, don't miss the Yorkshire Pudding Wraps at the York Roast Company. So unique and delicious! We also did a Ghost Walk Tour one evening and enjoyed it very much. Do your research and pick what you want to see as you can NOT see it all!

An amazing stay here. The staff are wonderful always on hand with a genuine warm smile and greeting to help your stay be special. The breakfast offer was delicious which sets you up for the day. Rooms are immaculate with an expresso coffee machine. A few hundred metres away from the hotel is York race course where you can walk around and then drop into York City Centre, around a 50 mins walk. A first class stay, unreservedly recommended and will be staying again.

Friends had recommended The Churchill to us, so we booked a two night midweek stay in February. The hotel is within easy walking distance of York city centre and has car parking available. All the staff were friendly, polite and helpful. Our room was very comfortable and equipped with everything we needed for our stay. We ate breakfast and dinner in the hotel restaurant on both days and the food was excellent.
