Kalymnos is a true authentic Greek Island experience without overcrowding from foreign tourists. We stayed at the Port where there are lots of options for authentic Greek cuisine and rented a car so we could explore the island and beaches. The Port is a true working port. Not just a tourist port. We are tired of overcrowded tourist spots. We felt like we were living as a local and the Yatrissa apartment was very spacious and convenient. Especially compared to all our other accommodations. Our host Anna was excellent and very helpful. She had some treats for us on arrival which was very much appreciated. We loved our 10-day stay on Kalymnos. It offers a true Greek spirit without being overly touristy. Highlights include: Charming small streets and beautiful architecture in the main town. Interesting and scenic beaches. Fantastic food and great espresso everywhere. A wonderful, rustic atmosphere. One important heads-up: be prepared for very loud dynamite explosions during local wedding celebrations. The noise is frightening and unexpected, but it is a local tradition. Kalymnos feels like a truly authentic Greek island: beautiful coastline, varied landscape, interesting architecture, and a vibrant local economy,. It is not touristy. The hotel is in Pothia, the capital of the island, and you see local people swimming at the beach near the hotel and you see them out and about every evening enjoying themselves at the cafes, taverns, and restaurants on the Harborfront promenade. There are many good food choices and the prices are reasonable. I tried the tsipouradika/ouzeri places, for meze served when you order a beer. Kalymnos has apparently the largest fishing fleet in Greece and I enjoyed fresh seafood for dinner at a couple different seafood restaurants. Htapadokeftedes (octopus fritters) is a tasty dish, only made in Kalymnos, and I enjoyed having it very much. Eptazymo is a unique Kalymnos bread specialty and I had it at breakfast every day. Rock climbers have discovered Kalymnos a few years ago , and I felt that Kalymnos has a lot to offer to all visitors. The house is quiet and big enough for a small group with a large garden en living/kitchen area. Internet is also good enough for working which isn't always the case at Kalymnos. All the appliances and utensils are there to cook, do laundry etc. You need a scooter to get around but it's not far from the restaurants (Massouri in less then 10 minutes) or climbing crags. The property and management team surpassed expectations. We visited over the Easter holiday and were welcomed by traditional tsoureki and easter eggs in the kitchen, while the house was very clean and not too big, nor too small.
