Kalymnos is a true authentic Greek Island experience without overcrowding from foreign tourists. We stayed at the Port where there are lots of options for authentic Greek cuisine and rented a car so we could explore the island and beaches. The Port is a true working port. Not just a tourist port. We are tired of overcrowded tourist spots. We felt like we were living as a local and the Yatrissa apartment was very spacious and convenient. Especially compared to all our other accommodations. Our host Anna was excellent and very helpful. She had some treats for us on arrival which was very much appreciated. We loved our 10-day stay on Kalymnos. It offers a true Greek spirit without being overly touristy. Highlights include: Charming small streets and beautiful architecture in the main town. Interesting and scenic beaches. Fantastic food and great espresso everywhere. A wonderful, rustic atmosphere. One important heads-up: be prepared for very loud dynamite explosions during local wedding celebrations. The noise is frightening and unexpected, but it is a local tradition. Kalymnos feels like a truly authentic Greek island: beautiful coastline, varied landscape, interesting architecture, and a vibrant local economy,. It is not touristy. The hotel is in Pothia, the capital of the island, and you see local people swimming at the beach near the hotel and you see them out and about every evening enjoying themselves at the cafes, taverns, and restaurants on the Harborfront promenade. There are many good food choices and the prices are reasonable. I tried the tsipouradika/ouzeri places, for meze served when you order a beer. Kalymnos has apparently the largest fishing fleet in Greece and I enjoyed fresh seafood for dinner at a couple different seafood restaurants. Htapadokeftedes (octopus fritters) is a tasty dish, only made in Kalymnos, and I enjoyed having it very much. Eptazymo is a unique Kalymnos bread specialty and I had it at breakfast every day. Rock climbers have discovered Kalymnos a few years ago , and I felt that Kalymnos has a lot to offer to all visitors. Kalymnos is truly a gem—peaceful, authentic, and full of character. The views are breathtaking, and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. One unforgettable place was Agios Savvas, a beautiful, soul-soothing church overlooking the entire island. A must-visit for peace, reflection, and panoramic views. Getting around was easy with Limani Auto Rental, a great family-owned business. Quick and smooth check-in and check-out—highly recommended if you want to explore the island freely. We absolutely loved Love Café, a cozy little spot by the harbor run by a giagia and papou. It's a true hole-in-the-wall with incredible coffee, delicious club sandwiches, and the sweetest owners. It quickly became our go-to. For food, Manias Seafood is a must-try—especially the octopus fritters and fresh tuna salad. Kalymnos has many hidden gems like these. Just note: the island is built on levels, with lots of stairs and hilly paths. It’s part of its charm, but good to be prepared. We stayed as a family of 4 (6yrs and 4yrs) the breakfast was great, we could walk to the climbing, and walk in to the town to have food in the eve. But do remember to take torches as the roads dark and no pavement. The Staff were exceptional! They really could no do enough for you.
