Nemea is a wine making region, and there are plenty of wineries open to visit, although we did not have time to do this. We tried to visit the Ancient Nemea site but it was unfortunately closed (closed on Tuesdays). The actual town of Nemea seems to be run down in parts, although effort has been made to plant wine barrels with flowers along the main streets. Locals were friendly when we asked for directions to restaurants, although on a Monday in mid March there was not a lot of choice. We ate at the Hamam Souvlaki Grill, which was very friendly and offered good value grilled meat options.

Nemea itself is known for wine-tasting, and it's a sweet little place that feels authentic and lived in by locals. It's perfectly located to see the acropolis of Corinth and Mycaene, plus for getting onto the motorway quickly to move on to other places in the Peloponnese. We could easily have stayed longer.

Nemea is a typical Greek working town.

Nemea is a typical Greek working town. It seems to be fairly compact. We drove down from Athens and we found the town without any difficulty using Google Maps. We were astonished by the number of wine makers and wished that we hadn't just had an overnight stop and had managed an extra day. There seemed to be plenty of restaurants and we chose to go to one that had great reviews in TripAdvisor called Danaos and Anastasis. The food was fantastic - we had the roast pork and the chicken skewers - and we would recommend the local bottled beer. We will be back to do the wineries some justice, to visit Ancient Nemea, to go back to the same restaurant and to meet some more lovely Greek people! All in all, a very good stay albeit one that was too short.
