We went during school holidays so it was pretty busy but the tourist high street was quiet during the day while everyone was on the beach. The food was excellent. Plenty of restaurants to choose from. The beach bars were also good. The Cretans were very friendly and helpful. Crete has plenty of interesting sites to visit both inland and on the coast. Plataniás is bustling - very busy full of shops (which are great) and restaurants. There are, unfortunately, too many places serving chips with everything! We wish there had been some more options, i.e. rice, authentic Cretan dishes, taverna based meals, but it is what it is. There was no need for a car - most places were walkable. Our villa was amazing, but we would not return to Plataniás - it seemed to have dropped down a notch since our trip last year. We saw quite a few young (and older) men walking around shirtless and some girls dressed quite inappropriately. I don't usually like touristy places but Platanias had a lovely feel about it. Not too many people, although this may have been because we went in September. We visited the War Museum - definitely worth it. Also went to John the Hermit cave and monastery at Kissimo which were unbelievable. The beach is nice, one can enjoy both sunrise & sunset at it. Warm waters. You must have beach shoes, as it is mostly made of rocks. You can go around by foot or bus, which runs every 20-30 minutes. Platanias has a good variety of shops, bar, restaurants to choose from, but our favourite by far was the SUN RISE BEACH RESTAURANT. It was calm and really nice, with a beautiful view. The upgrade made our stay exceed our expectations by far! The kids were happy - they played in the waterpark and drank virgin mojitos all day long. No cues at the water park and fun slides. The buffet included in the all inclusive package was okay - it met our expectations (which were quite low). Rooms are cleaned daily, and the hotel, including the pools, is spotless. Breakfast options are varied and meet different dietary needs. Several trips to historical sites and the most beautiful beaches in the Western coast of the island can be booked via the hotel.
