Like many Cretan coastal towns and villages, Rethymno is overwhelmed by us tourists. It's distressing to walk very crowded mediaeval streets surrounded by souvenir shops. The famous bakeries are wonderful and the harbour is really beautiful. Parking has been addressed but the experience is still not pleasant. We found having a drink and a light meal on the waterfront a joyless experience, crowded area and surly service. Very attractive, lively and super-friendly town with loads of pretty streets to wander around and numerous bars, restaurants and shops. The old town is mainly pedestrianised and easy to navigate, the town is very attractive and the choice of restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets is vast. The Old Town is full of history and narrow streets that need to be explored. There are so many excellent eating places to choose from with cocktail bars and ice cream shops you could eat somewhere different every night for weeks. Favourites include Cafe Galero and Taverna MInares. The Venetian Harbour is lovely walk with restaurants all round The front by the Old Town has plenty of bars which in the evening are full of young people enjoying themselves and although there is music its not too loud as you go past. All along the beach are cafes and bars which offer a good selection for all day eating. Having stayed there a week I now prefer it to Chania, much more going on in an easier access area and less crowded. Rethymno is a beautiful, compact and lively town.
Rethymno is a beautiful, compact and lively town. It probably takes a day or two to visit all the main touristy points of interest in town, but you will never get tired of exploring smaller out of the way streets, shopping or eating out. One of the main attractions is how centrally Rethymno is located on the island - most beaches, mountain villages, monasteries, gorges and other towns are perfect distance for a daytrip. Just don't completely trust Google maps to take you to some of the old villages or sites like Ancient Lappa unless you want to descend down a hill on cobblestone path with a mud pit at the bottom.Guest review byGeddyUnited States - 10

The old town is rich with historical buildings and features. The fort is worth a visit too, make sure you get a guide book; the on-site information is very sparse. We got an excellent price for the basement apartment which was very cool, even in the soaring Greek heat! The beach is meters away, there's a limited amount of free parking (you can find more free parking places in the area too if needed) and there are plenty of shops, bars and restaurants around.
