Thessaloniki is a wonderful destination to absorb Greek culture, food, and history. The city feels safe and readily walkable. Their is much hidden to uncover in the historical sites and churches and mosaics abound. We did a cookery course and visited the tombe of Philip II by taxi with a guide. We climbed up to the prison at the top of the town. Great historic city, very vibrant and full of life. We have visited archeologic and Byzantium museum, explored Ano Polis and city core. Definitely lots of things to see and experience. There are restaurants and fast foods for any budget each serving amazing food. I would recommend to visit the city only if you also go to the other places in Greece. The historical heritage here is not the most impressive, and the nearest beach is an hour away by public transport.
