The Sunny Side of Croatia
Stunning Split stands proudly on the eastern shores of the Adriatic Sea, and due to its great climate is called the Mediterranean Flower. It features eclectic architecture, spectacular views and delicious cuisine.
Split is centred around the ancient Roman Palace of the Emperor Diocletian, a magnificent building constructed at the beginning of the 4th century AD and boasting limestone and marble towers, columns and courtyards. It lies in a bay decorated with white sails of yachts, as sailing is definitely Split’s big thing!
The city is full of architectural gems, one of which is St. Duje’s Cathedral, the oldest cathedral in the world, built in 305 AD and combining both Roman and Catholic influences. Nearby Varoš is a must-see, one of the city’s oldest parts, full of charming streets and beautiful houses.
Make sure you visit the Bačvice Beach and the Riva promenade, popular with locals and full of cafés and palm trees. While on the hunt for local specialities, try soparnik - wood-fired dough filled with vegetables - or local soda drinks Pipi and Orela.

Historic Split was every bit the eye opener we hoped it would be, a modern city 5 minutes from natural beaches ideal for swimming. But the crowning aspect is the way Croatians have used their historical building to continue living in, using as restaurants, homes, apartments and flats. Split & the whole of Croatia has so much history to explore. I would recommend a walking tour, unfortunately we did not have enough time. The shops are lovely to walk around, blended into Diocletian's palace, beautiful place. Picasso's cafeb/bar beside our accommodation was lovely for breakfast, get there early as it fills up quickly. Loved Split , we spent a week on the islands and finished with 3 days in Split before coming home. Loved walking the old town, be prepared for map reading and the maze of alleyways and quaint streets filled with restaurants and lovely individual shops. Spend an evening in the old palace square having a drink and listening to the musicians. Spent one day on a trip to Krka national park with the beautiful waterfalls and wine tasting in a local village trip. Worth a visit. Fabulous historical city with everything nearby. Ferry service to islands is easy. Highly recommend a walk up the Marian Steps to enjoy the incredible view. There were different kind of tea and coffee in the kitchen and many different kind of shampoo, shower gel etc in the bathroom, probably leftovers from the previous guests. Very good style that the owner leaves them in the apartment for the future guests. The apartment is just next to the big square in the old town. First floor access was very important for me, and it was an easy ~100 m walk from a parking lot (I had a lot of luggage to bring in, and I drove). Right near a great square that is a bit less touristy than elsewhere in the old town -- I went to Split to watch Croatia in the UEFA League of Nations final, and was not disappointed.
