If you are seeking a hideaway from Bali’s chaotic Kuta, Ubud provides a welcome respite with its secluded paths, calming temples and specialised spa resorts. Surrounded by rice paddies, coconut trees and lush forests of green, Ubud is seen as the cultural centre of Bali.
The road leading up to Ubud features little villages specialising in handicrafts like Celuk (silver jewellery), Batuan (paintings) and Mas (wood carvings). Ubud was a much busier city than I had anticipated, and I was pleasantly surprised! We loved the busy city and all the culture it held. We could have spent days wandering around exploring new places. Some of the highlights for us were going on a huge day trip to the rice fields, touring the coffee plantation, the elephant zoo and the dancing at the palace. There were so many activities there but many of them involved too many stairs to take part in - like the yoga. But they did have massage that came to your room which we took advantage of and because of the stairs, we did a LOT of room service. I recommend that Balinese dancing and dinner which was beautiful. I liked Ubud a lot better than Uluwatu and I think it is a very good introduction to Bali. It is extremely chaotic, so having the hotel so quiet and relaxing, slightly tucked away was an excellent combination.
