A Gourmet Delight
World-class cuisine is what Bologna does best. Nowhere in Italy, a country with considerable culinary heritage, is the food considered to be better than in this medieval gem.
Bolognese sauce of course originated here, but to try the real thing look for "ragú" on the menu. Cold meats and cheeses are also exquisite. Make sure you save plenty of time for eating – the Bolognese like to savor their food, so a meal can last for hours.
Many of the best eateries and homemade ice cream shops are found behind the mile upon mile of porticoed streets, now UNESCO World Heritage sites. The complex of medieval churches and buildings in cobbled Piazza Santo Stefano is a tranquil spot to explore. Climb one of the Two Towers nearby (not the one leaning at a startling angle) for spectacular views of this red-roof city.
The focal point of Bologna is huge Piazza Maggiore, whose Santo Petronio church has an unimpressive, half-finished façade that doesn’t prepare you for its sheer scale inside. Fanning out from this square, the buildings of Europe’s oldest university, founded in 1088, are home to the city’s best museums.

Bologna is a great city with plenty to see and well located if wanting to travel to nearer towns for the day. We spent 4 nights in the city and saw eveything we wanted to at a very relaxed pace. 3 full days is about the max you'd want to see most of the city. Would definitely recommend the walk to the Sanctuary of the Madonna but perhaps not on a very hot day! - just take it easy as plenty of steps and uphill walking through the 666 arches (unless you cheat and take the roadtrain) - and take some water, perhaps take the train down is best. Lots of great restaurants - some hidden away down side streets - a bit pricey nearer the centre so do try to track down some better value smaller ones rather than those aiming for Joe Tourist. The Piazza is great - try and get there early before the main crowds. Recommend a walk up the clock tower for super views across the city - easy to buy tickets on the day inside (Early Sept) and was not very busy - also includes access to the museum which is interesting to stroll around. Would expect it to be very overcrowded in peak season - 2nd week of Sept was ok and very few children around so easy to see and do all on our agenda.Guest review byTimmyGUnited Kingdom - 10.0

The people are wonderful in Italy, friendly, helpful, even if you do not know the language! I like that in Italy and France you are not expected to tip. It’s built in. A vibrant city, with plenty of history, living up to its reputation as a city of food. Good value eating and drinking wherever you look and some superb food shops. There are lots of road works being done at the moment, many of them seem to be for the tram line. I'm not sure how long this is gonna last but I'm sure a visit to Bologna would be much better after the construction sites have cleared up. My room was on the roof, but temperature was fine and was really, really spacious (to be honest it could be for 3 people).
