We stopped here on our way from Postjona, Slovenia back to Venice to catch our flight home. We found Cividale del Friuli charming and very historical. It was an interesting place and we got a lot out of our less then 24 hours there. There are some great restaurants and museums. We went to the Archeological museum and it was very interesting. There are views of mountains around. We had a rental car with Navigation so that helped us get around. A calm delightful town.
A calm delightful town. It deserves to be better known in the area. The atmosphere was very relaxing to walk around. On Mondays most shops are closed. We experienced the lively café culture on Tuesday morning. Loads of cyclists passing through. The monastery is exceptionally interesting. We bought food in the supermarket and cooked for ourselves. Cividale is a truly charming little town with wonderful medieval streets,buildings,squares and museums. It's a quiet, historic town and ideal as a base to discover the Friuli region. Udine is just a short ride away, the Slovenian border only a few kms away. If you are a wine enthusiast like myself you have small wine bars around the town serving the delicious local Friulian wines and there are many vineyards just a short drive away. First Gianni picks us up at train station and escorts us to apartment. He gives us great recommendations for local places. Then he treats us to a glass of wine when we bump into him later in the day. Finally he was so flexible when our travel plans were disrupted by a national train strike. The apartment overlooks a beautiful piazza, yet it’s quiet. Comfortable beds. Nicely appointed.
