The Sassi is a must experience in your lifetime place! A TukTuk tour is best if you have mobility issues as did a family member. The local wines and cuisine Materana are delicious and Restaurante Stano is a very good choice for an elegant evening out. Get up early and walk around the circumference of the Sassi before everyone else gets there, it’s magical. Matera is a magical place that is hard to describe in words.
Matera is a magical place that is hard to describe in words. Yes, visually it’s breathtaking. There are photo opportunities around every corner, but take the time to walk the laneways slowly and really appreciate where you are. There are lots of stairs but there is no hurry to be anywhere so take a leisurely pace, stop for a rest, a meal, a drink or a gelato at the many cafes and restaurants. Great place to visit but parking a bit of an issue. Main car park we used was €10 a day and was very tight so no wonder most cars had scrapes and bangs on them 😳. An evening walking tour with guide was absolutely superb and a real must. Gaetano, our guide was brilliant and so much cooler to do in the evening.
