Founded by Etruscans around 900 BC, the city was first conquered by Romans and later by Lombards. The Middle Ages saw it becoming the independent and flourishing Republic of Siena, until its annexation to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
The economic difficulties that followed turned out to be a blessing for the preservation of its historic center. Adorned with frescoes by Ghirlandaio and bass-reliefs by Donatello, Lorenzo Ghiberti, and Jacopo della Quercia, the Duomo represents the highest expression of this well-kept legacy. The shell-shaped Piazza del Campo, with the Palazzo Pubblico and the Gaia Fountain, is still the heart and soul of the city. Follow the labyrinth of narrow streets and passages that irradiate from there and you will be enchanted by its romantic atmosphere from ancient times.

Great and interesting city.
Great and interesting city. Been there before, many years ago, and wanted to see it again. The piazza Il Campo is fantastic - the most odd and beautiful square in Italy and maybe in Europe. I was there for one night only and for business but managed to see a lot in two hours. I visited the Duomo but didn't have time for the Cielo or the Tower by the Piazza Il Campo. But it's small enough to do in a day or two. It is very hilly and there are lots of cobbles so would not recommend for anyone with mobility issues. Also you can't book taxis in advance and it can be tricky at rush hour to get any taxi. Also to note the train station is far from the centre. I would advise to arrive by coach if you land in Florence (tram to the main bus station and then a coach that drops you in the centre of Siena).Guest review byChloé G.United Kingdom - 10

The musical festival was on when I was there.

Siena is full of wonderful architecture, art and places to enjoy BUT for anyone interested in the early Sienese painting of Duccio et al NB the Pinacoteca Nazionale has closed the entire floor of early paintings for the foreseeable future for upgrading the eco standards etc from August 2025.
