Italy’s Answer to Vienna
Near the Slovenian border, Trieste combines the waterside setting of Venice with the elegance of Vienna. The Habsburgs ruled here for over 500 years and built Miramare Castle on a rocky outcrop to the north-west. Their other influences include stately Piazza Unità d’Italia, looking out to sea and spectacularly lit at night.
But this is just a glimpse into Trieste's long and fascinating history. The 1st-century Riccardo Arch hides in a narrow street, and part-way up the hills behind the city centre are Roman theatre remains, while columns from the Roman forum stand next to San Giusto castle and cathedral.
The most photographed church is Sant’Antonio Nuovo, overlooking a boat-lined canal. The nearby Stock Exchange has a colonnaded façade and its square houses some of the city’s shops. The most popular cultural attraction is the Revoltella Museum of modern art, while more sobering is Risiera di San Sabba, a former concentration camp near the Palatrieste and Nereo Rocco sports stadiums.
Watersports include windsurfing and kitesurfing from the port which is an important coffee importer. Unsurprisingly, the city’s Viennese-style coffee houses serve top-quality brews, and the best is reportedly Caffè San Marco, once frequented by famous authors.

The weather was fabulous for our stay. Spectacular architecture. Small, mainly flat city, so easy to walk about; Excellent public transport. We ate mostly in Asian/ Oriental restaurants. The choice of Italian food seemed to be limited to pizza and pasta - couldn't seem to find steak on any menu. Be aware of cover charges - all establishments charge a cover charge - some larger than others. Trieste has a cruise terminal. Nice city with history.
Nice city with history. Unfortunately I was not lucky with B&B were I stayed and it was pouring rain with flood I tried 5 restaurants during the rain all of them said wére full at the end a hamburger restaurant accepted that I get in. Trieste is a great "medium" size city. Not the WOW attractions (or crowds) of Venice or Firenze, quieter and a little more user friendly. Simpler and smaller museos, churches and sites. All of this is fine, Just temper your expectations. Central city is very walkable. Great, easy to use bus system. Day Bus trip to Slovenia was interesting and fun. (there are several) Hop on/off Bus is good way to see city. We were so glad to have stayed in Trieste rather than Venice to catch our cruise, Trieste was so charming and beautiful!! We highly recommend to any/everyone one to fly into and stay in Trieste rather than Venice! Trieste has a small airport so make transportation reservations through your hotel before arriving. It cost us $150US for transportaion fee from airport to city center because it is quiet a distance & we were 30 minutes late due to weather so they tacked on a $30 late arrival fee to the original $120 but still worth every penny we spent!!Guest review byBroussardUnited States - 10.0

The hotel is very nice and clean, our room was very comfortable and warm, the bathroom was very spacious. We were there only for 1 night because we had to catch a flight early in the morning. We chose this hotel because it was very close to the Trieste Centrale train station where we had to catch a train to airport early in the morning.
