Italy’s Answer to Vienna
Near the Slovenian border, Trieste combines the waterside setting of Venice with the elegance of Vienna. The Habsburgs ruled here for over 500 years and built Miramare Castle on a rocky outcrop to the north-west. Their other influences include stately Piazza Unità d’Italia, looking out to sea and spectacularly lit at night.
But this is just a glimpse into Trieste's long and fascinating history. The 1st-century Riccardo Arch hides in a narrow street, and part-way up the hills behind the city centre are Roman theatre remains, while columns from the Roman forum stand next to San Giusto castle and cathedral.
The most photographed church is Sant’Antonio Nuovo, overlooking a boat-lined canal. The nearby Stock Exchange has a colonnaded façade and its square houses some of the city’s shops. The most popular cultural attraction is the Revoltella Museum of modern art, while more sobering is Risiera di San Sabba, a former concentration camp near the Palatrieste and Nereo Rocco sports stadiums.
Watersports include windsurfing and kitesurfing from the port which is an important coffee importer. Unsurprisingly, the city’s Viennese-style coffee houses serve top-quality brews, and the best is reportedly Caffè San Marco, once frequented by famous authors.

Clean and friendly city. Great restaurants and old city area. Nearby Miramare Castle/Palace is a must-see. Hire e-bikes and ride around the bay to Miramare. Only 1 canal, which is closed off, so it's not Venice, but way less crowds too!Guest review byRobertAustralia - 10.0

The weather was fabulous for our stay. Spectacular architecture. Small, mainly flat city, so easy to walk about; Excellent public transport. We ate mostly in Asian/ Oriental restaurants. The choice of Italian food seemed to be limited to pizza and pasta - couldn't seem to find steak on any menu. Be aware of cover charges - all establishments charge a cover charge - some larger than others. Trieste has a cruise terminal. Nice city with history.
Nice city with history. Unfortunately I was not lucky with B&B were I stayed and it was pouring rain with flood I tried 5 restaurants during the rain all of them said wére full at the end a hamburger restaurant accepted that I get in. Trieste is a great "medium" size city. Not the WOW attractions (or crowds) of Venice or Firenze, quieter and a little more user friendly. Simpler and smaller museos, churches and sites. All of this is fine, Just temper your expectations. Central city is very walkable. Great, easy to use bus system. Day Bus trip to Slovenia was interesting and fun. (there are several) Hop on/off Bus is good way to see city. Trieste is an Old city with lots of history to see and learn about: Maritime Museo, Castle & cathedral (small) of San Giusto, San Sabba Rice Mill National Monument (very moving), Museo Revoltella, tram to Opicina is charming,Guest review byphilItaly

It was comfortable to stay, we had everything we needed in the little kitchen too (maybe a microwave would be nice to have). It was also clean and tidy. I liked that I can park my car in a safe place for free. Beach is close to the apartment, but to reach Trieste centrum, you need to drive, or take a bus (the bust stop is next to the apartment) so the location is very good too.
