Fukuoka City is compact compared to Tokyo so it's really chill and easy to navigate. There are spaces for children like parks, swan boat rides and easy drives to places like Yanagawa for its canals and local craft, Yame for craft, Kurume for fruit picking and Momochi Beach presents an amazing sunset. Close proximity to mountains and seasides makes this a great city to experience nature but still have access to small malls and city nightlife.

The city is a bit more worn down then I remember from prior trips. Lots of good places have closed or changed into different businesses. The construction is also more frequent around the main station. The food is still just as good as ever and there are still hidden gems if you explore some of the less traveled areas. Unexpectedly hot this autumn though.

Fukuoka is a great city; one can relatively get around by walking or using their subway/bus system. The airport is literally "around the corner" only two stops away using the subway line. Relaxed and laidback like Nagasaki, it is a very inviting city.

This was the last city on our trip.

This was the last city on our trip. We started in Tokyo, then went to Kamakura, Mishima, Kyoto, Nara, Osaka and Hiroshima. Fukuoka, as seen from an outside perspective, is the most vibrant. Communication is more candid, humor is more evident, people are more talkative, and there's a slight "Vegas meets Japan" vibe at night, with some of the more adult clubs' advertising.

I was in Fukuoka for 7 days (4 days at the Nishitetsu Croom Kushida Shrine, and another 3 at the Mitsui Garden Nakasu—just for the experience of being at two chain hotels). The city is big but clean and well laid out, making using the GPS easy. I felt the population wasn’t all that crowded, compared with Tokyo. The center of transportation is the Hakata Station, big but manageable. Actually, on the very first day at Fukuoka Airport, I was confused of how to get an IC card at a machine but was helped by a very kind elderly lady (a volunteer) who spoke good English. She helped me get the card, told me where to go for the shuttle bus to the domestic terminal, and in fact followed me to the gate. Then, I took the subway (using the IC card) to Hakata Station and changed for another line to Geon but didn’t get the right line so ended up having to walk more than I should have. Later, a friend told me to take a taxi since it was quite reasonably priced but I ended up walking back and forth to Hakata Station most of the time since the first hotel wasn’t far at all. Outside of Fukuoka, a few friends and I also took the Shinkansen to Saga, a lovely little ancient village specializing in making ceramics—but try to get there early, eg, before 9 or 9.30, or else you might have trouble finding a parking like us who rented a Toyota from the Saga Station. Another city that we explored was Beppu, a much bigger place than Saga—with the 7 famous onsens, including mud ones which we didn’t try—too bad. I haven’t seen much of Fukuoka or Kyushu Island, so must get back there soon! I loved Fukuoka! It was a good experience—with practically everything, good food, good department stores (eg. Mitsukoshi, Canal City, Daimaru Tenjin), even a good CD shop (ie. Tower Records).

Comfy property, easy to get to as you’re in the main city of Fukuoka - close to the convenience stores and Hakata station. Great to take day trips from too. Very polite and professional service from the staff. The room is a little small, I can imagine if you had large suitcases it would be very difficult to use but we didn’t have this issue with smaller bags - this room size is to be expected of a business hotel anyway! Nice amenities available too + handy umbrellas for borrowing use.

We've stayed at 2 Monterey hotels already - Osaka & Fukuoka. Rooms are bigger than usual in Japan. Beds are also comfortable and bigger than Japan's usual. The location was perfect for us. It is a 2 mins walk to 711, Watanabe-dori train and bus station, Family Mart and a supermarket. They also offer unlimited coffee & tea at the lobby. I love it that they also have a weighing scale at the lobby to weigh our luggage.

The room was lovely and beautifully appointed. It was also so clean. The hotel amenities were great and there was a lovely rooftop pool area, bar and restaurant. The staff were friendly and very helpful. The location is superb, right near Hakata Train Station which was so convenient for getting around Fukuoka.

Very good hotel for a reasonable price. I highly recommend staying here. While traveling Japan, this is probable the best affordable hotel I've stayed at. Rooms are very clean, A/C working, nicely decorated. Good central location downtown Fukuoka.
