Llama is a typical Japanese town. Great for a walk, but one day is plenty! Madarao ski resort scenery, location is wonderful. Madarao is a small village about 25 minutes away by bus from Iiyama. It is very accessible from Tokyo by Shinkansen. Dinner has to be booked in advance since there are not too many choices. The exceptional hospitality of the staff truly stood out—they were incredibly welcoming and went above and beyond on several occasions. They graciously accommodated our request to switch from Japanese to European breakfasts and even resolved an unexpected car issue for us. The showers are shared (gender separated) with a public onsen inside the bathroom. The bathroom sinks are in the middle of the hallway. Walls are paper thin so you can hear everyone brushing their teeth. The slopes are across the street so it’s practically ski in ski out. Lots of restaurants to go to, however, you must bring cash.
