The incredible hospitality and amount of caring will leave you stunned. The owner picked us up from the station and when we were leaving, drove us back. The whole accommodation feels very homey. The gaming room, private onsens and nintendo in the room made us feel like we're on a vacation at our favourite uncle. Breakfast was also excellent. We can 100% recommend and will stay again!

Nice location to visit for max two days, touristic but not too over-crowded and people in general very friendly. Some of the Onsen are amazing - if you like it - and the ski resort (if open since top part closes fast with some wind and snow) is small and somewhat outdated, but still nice for 1-2 days. Some restaurants offer good value for money, but reserve on time and be prepared to have diner around 18/18:30 latest since everything closes early.

It is a beautfiul town high up in the moutains.

It is a beautfiul town high up in the moutains. The toursit part of town centres around the hot spring and the way it is lit these days makes it particularly beautiful at night. There are temples and parks to visit and some quaint little shops. You can stand and watch soba noodles being made by hand and then enjoy them for a very reasonable price. Walk up the hill and around the none touristy parts of town. there are some great family run restaurants serving delicous food at prices the locals pay. Apart from the soba place which is in the toursity part of twon, restaurants in that area are pretty expensive. It gets cold, quite cold, down to -5c in January during my stay. Be aware that getting in and out of the town is via limited timetabled train and bus. Unless you are there for the skiing, get in early in the morning, stay 1 night and get out the next afternoon.

You can't miss the smell, but the view and the atmosphere are totally worth it!! Highly recommended to visit There are free footbaths around the town, just don't forget to bring your own towel. Plenty of places to stop for food, be it snacks or a meal.

Perfect one night excursion not too far from Tokyo.

Perfect one night excursion not too far from Tokyo. You should visit the cooling pools both for evening illumination and the next day to see them clearly. Don't miss the 15 min stroll to the Sainokawara outdoor bath. The park on the way is picturesque and being able to bathe in a hot spring river under the open sky was my favourite Onsen experience in all my years in Japan. Definitely one of the must do trips in Japan!

i think to stay 2-3 nights is perfect. i am more like a relax traveler, cant rushing to here and there. our first night is kinda wasted because we drove from NRT arrived at 930pm. otherwise, i would have time to visit Onsen Monkey, but it is good so i can leave it next time to visit with my kids :) but 2 nights will be ideal. also must do the massage there, you cannot believe, Tanaka san is GREAT, very professional, so we went there twice when we only stay 2 days. i dont have the exact address. but when you park your car or from train/bus station, his shop is located on the walk way down to the busy area. hope you all will find it. we are very lucky to find tanaka san.

Soumeian was absolutely amazing! Everything was perfect. The rooms are huge with so much space. There is a private onsen to use and everything is so clean. The staff are exquisite and pay so much attention to detail. We don't speak Japanese but the staff made sure to do their best to communicate with us. The food provided was so tasty and huge portions.. Everything about the hotel is beautiful. I would recommend Soumeian in a heartbeat to anyone staying in Kusatsu. It's honestly a bargain for what you get.

Well the old-fashioned hotel from another century is worth the trip! You will find yourself in a Miyazaki storyline. Our room was quite spacious and well furnished. The hotel has few entertaining areas like bowling, crane machines, onsen and a pool (charged), closing pretty early. They also have a cafe and restaurants. The staff speaks English. The plus: a free shuttle bus will stop at the bus terminal to and from the hotel. A convenient store (Lawson) is located around the hotel.

The hotel was newly renovated and we had to wear slippers at the hotel entrance and throughout the hotel. It was beautifully decorated. We booked a Japanese tatami room and slept on futons (family of 4). The room has no shower facilities so you need to comfortable going to the onsen for your bath. We had a set dinner in the hotel which was wonderful. The hotel was also walking distance to the narrow streets and local attractions in Kusatsu.

The water in the Onsen was so good, and the hotel is noticeably cheaper than many others in the town. The food, although a buffet, was good as well. Extensive range of yukata sizes is always a plus too for western travellers.
