I went to Nagano to do historical research at three separate facilities about an hours drive from central Nagano City. -- My main objective was visiting the Underground Imperial Headquarters 松代大本営地下壕 (松代象山地下壕) at Matsushiro. The tunnel system is impressive, and the museum next to it adds a lot of background. -- I visited the Hijiri Aviation Museum 聖博物館 in Omi, which displays items and posters full of info about its past as a stop for those on the way to Zenkoji Temple in Nagano City, as well as having a few combat aircraft and a main gun from the Japanese Battleship Mutsu. In an out-of-the-way place. -- I also went to the Mugonkan 戦没画学生慰霊美術館 無言館 in Ueda City. A very somber place since it introduces Japanese artists (showing a couple of their paintings) who died during the war years. Also in a rather remote location. It's unfortunate that all three have signs and displays that are almost exclusively in Japanese. Non-Japanese speakers who are interested in World War II history and happen to be near Nagano may still get something out of a self-tour of the tunnel system in Matsushiro, which is interesting to see in person (and cool in summer). The Wikipedia entry for it seems accurate, much more than you can find on site in English. Be aware that cameras are allowed at Hijiri, but cannot be used in the Mugonkan and in the Matsushiro museum (the tunnels are okay). I don't recommend taking kids to any of these sites.

Absolutely loved Nagano, so friendly and clean and easy to get around. We lucked out and arrived when the the dance festival was on which was really fun. There are lovely restaurants, good shopping and it’s easy to get around. The old part of the town and the temple are beautiful. We took the bus to see the snow monkeys as well which was worth every penny, even though it was 30 degrees they were still in the onsen, it was magical!

we loved staying in central Nagano.

we loved staying in central Nagano. We were only a few minutes walk to the station and our final destination. the staff were very friendly and welcoming even at 9.30 pm. The bed and our room were very comfortable. All that we needed.

So much shopping to do both local or duty free.

So much shopping to do both local or duty free. Many sights to see and explore and of course close to the ski fields. Be sure to explore outside of the Train/Bus complex for shopping to compare prices. The variety of foods both fresh or pre-packaged are mind boggling. Awesome sushi, sensational bakery products and outstanding wines. Amazing variety of restaurants and as always all the staff are extremely friendly. I left my mobile phone on the bus seat and their staff ran around the area until they found me to return it! So wonderful!

We were there for a couple days just before we go snowboarding at Hakuba. Although it's a main station, the city is quite quiet which if you have been to Tokyo, it's totally opposite. It's just not what you expected. But if you like nature this is one of go-to place. You need to explore outskirt of Nagano(for example Togakushi Shrine) but it would take a while to get there.

The city of Nagano is easy to access on foot, which is how we like to travel. You can easily walk around the downtown area, and the shopping street leading up to the shrine was the best we have experienced in Japan. We did not have time to go to the Olympic museum, but will plan to do that if we return to Nagano. You would need to take transportation to the museum as it is outside of the general area.

Great location accessible from Nagano station on level two without going outside. We had a twin room as this tends to give you more room in Japanese hotels but we needn’t have worried as the room was a generous size for Japan. We had a high floor room with a view towards the mountains and as requested they had put us at the end of a corridor to limit noise. All usual room facilities were available and we had a comfy chair and small table as well. The TV was a good size and had the advantage of Netflix’s available on the remote itself.

Location is perfect, just across the station & bus terminal. Room is spacious, clean with modern design and the shampoo, body wash, and conditioner smells luxury. The breakfast is delicious with so many options of Japanese and Western foods. The bed and pillows were comfortable. Definitely will stay at this hotel again if I visit Nagano again. And they have sustainability program which donated unused toiletries. I hope more and more hotel follow their approach.

The hotel is very close to the Nagano station. The receptionist was very gentle and helped us a lot during our stay (even though his English was not perfect, he was very helpful and we really appreciated his kindness, a big thanks to him). The room was clean and a lot of amenities (comparing to other hotels) are available in the lobby. The breakfast was a buffet with a mix of Japanese and continental dishes, I really appreciated the local juices.

Excellent staff. Room was nice with a seating area and didn't feel too overly cramped. The breakfast was a range of western and japanese style food, so it should suit anybody. There are laundry facilites and there is a lawson down right next to the hotel. The location was super close to Nagano Station. Well worth the price (which wasn't even that much).

The hotel is very well located, so close to the train station that we went by foot to the hotel. Breakfast is very good. There is a lot of Japanese options so you can try different foods. There is also a good number of options for vegetarians. There is a coffee machine free for customers.
