If you are planning to do a trip to Hakone, I think it is smarter to stay in Odawara than in Hakone-Yamoto. Odawara is a small town, but it has bars, restaurants, and is much more alive at night. Yes, you lose 20-30 min daily for your Hakone trip, but it is compensated with a wider variety of restaurants and bars. Also, the Castle is impressive, and the beach is relaxing!

Odawara is on the fringe of the Hakone region.

Odawara is on the fringe of the Hakone region. Hotel prices were much cheaper than further up the mountain. If you want the mountain onsen experience, Odawara is not for you. As a base to explore Hakone region, Odawara was a good choice. The small city has shopping and appeared to have more things to do at night than other towns further up the mountain. Did not get to visit Odawara Castle but saw a number of other castles throughout Japan.

This is a practical hotel option for a minimal but clean place to spend the night. We needed a place to spend the night after arriving in Odawara at night before leaving for Hakone the next morning. The rooms and bathrooms were small but were as described. It met my expectations. It was short walk from the railway station and there were many restaurants along the way

I took a chance on Odowara since it was the closest we could get to Fuji while staying on a main shinkansen line. I saw they had the castle that we could do at least so got a traditional inn there and spent 2 days. It's a quaint city and there is a lot of good food to be had, the castle was great for an afternoon it has pretty grounds, a museum, and observatory. The city is very walkable. Aside from that there isn't much to do, most people apparently use it as a means of seeing Hakone which has more to do. We didn't see Hakone because we were avoiding taking the subways and there aren't any shinkansen that go out there so we just relaxed and enjoyed our ryokan, mostly. I think if you want a break from the major urban areas or want to see what regular life in Japan is about I would recommend Odowara.

Great little town and the perfect stop over for your forward journeys to other points of interest. Close to lots of travel options and we took advantage of the Hakone Free Pass that we collected from Odawara Station to explore Hakone and Mt Fuji. Some of the little alleyways were probably not suitable for children. But if you are looking for a nice little place to stop for the night, this bets the city.
