I was in Champassak during the Wat Phou Festival which was great and interesting and then returned for one night after being in the 4000 Islands before heading north. The Temple are marvellous and would like to see it without all the tourists and festival goers but I enjoyed the festival particularly the opening and the Alms Ceremony for the monks.
We went down the Wat Oum Tomo by a small private boat - a 2 hour trip each way around the island, but it was well worth it.
Champassak is peaceful and encourages relaxation although I found bicycling in the rice paddies gave me insight into country life.
My most vivid memory is sitting by the Mekong and watching the most beautiful sunrises I have ever seen over a river that was as still as glass.

The roads in Champasak are very bad with massive pot holes, I recommend to hire a 4wd. Pakse has lots of markets to look at and there are some beautiful waterfall to look at just 1-2 hours drive. The Mekong river is amazing to look at also. I highly recommend going to the Vat Phou.

We had a top floor room and the view of the Mekong was incredible. The room was spacious, clean and the bed looked right onto the river.
Everything about the RR was top-class. We felt as if we were the only guests. English was spoken really well by the key customer service staff and the answer to any request was always yes. The staff always made eye-contact and greeted us with sabaidee.
They helped us organise trips out and the free bikes enabled us to cycle around the rice fields and Champasak town.
The sunset cruise is a must!

this is a quirky place. clean, comfy, good wifi, great location for Phong su, local potteries, and rice trails. on the banks of the Mekong with amazing views and owner can arrange travel to 4000 Islands direct from Champasak. This trip was wonderful: down wooden steps to a narrow boat, cross the Mekong to the bus. all the google searches wanted a return to Pakse
