Commonly spelled Fez, this city was Morocco’s capital during Middle Ages. The city was originally composed of two separate settlements located along the banks of the Jawhar River. Madinat Fas was founded in 789 by Idris I, while Al-'Aliya was founded by his son Idris II. Both towns grew autonomously until the Almoravids unified them in 1070 under the name ‘Fas’. The city is still considered a beacon of the Islamic civilisation, due to its ancient ‘madrasas’ Islamic colleges.
The Old Town or ‘medina’ has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, representing one of the best preserved historic centres in the world. The famous ‘riads’ or small traditional hotels are located in the medina, which is also called Fes Al-Bali.

The rooms were clean and comfortable and tastefully decorated. Our host was fabulous: helpful and kind, anything we asked for he just made happen. The room was comfortable and bathroom super clean - and trust me, this is not that common! Fatima was ready to prepare breakfast even at 3 a.m., nothing being an issue at all. This was the first time someone was so helpful to me in Morocco and I have already been in Morocco 3 times. The staff are very accommodating and helpful, and as a solo traveller I felt safe. They made my stay very comfortable. It’s a budget hotel no frills but clean.
