Chapala is a nice and very relaxed town right at the lake with the same name! It has a supermarket, but also a nice local market with fresh fruit and vegetables. Considering that the area is very popular with tourists it isn't overly touristy. The local population is still very present in every day life. Prices are still reasonable! We liked Chapala.
We liked Chapala. In our opinion, it had a better feel than Ajijic, which we stayed in before and visited again this trip. There was a central market right across the road from our lodging and it was a convenient source of fresh fruit and veggies. There was also good fresh bread, cheese and a variety of meat. There were some good restaurants in town but the open air chicken & chips place (50m to the left after exiting the hotel) made us sick, so we couldn't recommend it.Guest review byDavidCanada - 10.0

The town of Chapala is a Mexican town not a touristy town like Ajijic. Chapala is laid back. More true Mexican than we expected. Everyone was friendly and we never felt afraid. It was great to watch the local Indian tribes perform since we were there during a Cultural Week. We had an Italian dinner at Romeo and Juiletta's, breakfast and cappuccino at the Paris Restaurant; every meal we had was great. Chapala is only 30 minutes from the Guadalajara airport and an hour or so from the town of Guadalajara. We really enjoyed our short time there and hope to go back soon for longer.Guest review byC. The Malacon is the place to be.
The Malacon is the place to be. Everything that you need is there. We ate at the hotel we stayed in, but there are countless restaurants to enjoy on the malacon and also a short walk from there.
