In the 1990s, Isla was less-developed with fewer beach...
In the 1990s, Isla was less-developed with fewer beach hotels. The entire north end was one large beach with unpaved streets, rather primitive and exotic, and the experience was low cost. Over the years the beach has lost a lot of sand due to some severe hurricanes and sand-bag berms have been built out to prevent more erosion. The streets were paved with block pavers and the addition of hotels has brought more tourists. These changes are probably inevitable considering the growth direction of tourism and its economic importance, but it's been more or less as it is now for the last 20 years in which we've visited many times. Compared to Playa Del Carmen which has changed dramatically, and Tulum which now has an international airport, it's kept its essential character by being isolated from the rest of the coast, and is still a great place to unwind, snorkel, and stroll the streets, beaches and rocky north coast. There is a singular charm about the island and it's residents and labor force that ferry over from Cancun, that keeps us coming back and I hope that never changes. The restaurants, to their credit, have improved over the years and that is a pleasant advancement.Guest review byGaryUnited States - 10.0

The beaches and blue water were stunning.
The beaches and blue water were stunning. We stayed in the middle of the island and found 2 good restaurants to eat at. Our full day there was spent swimming with the whale sharks and we returned to Isla Mujeres North Beach for a swim and lunch. The weather was extremely hot and unfortunately the shaded areas were all owned and needed to be paid for. Isla Mujeres is a small but very busy island, very popular among american tourists. It's easy to get there by ferry from Cancun. There is no need for a car, you can rent a golf cart, there is no public transport. Playa de Norte is very busy with boats coming for a day as well. I would recommend visiting other beaches in south part of the islands where is much quieter.Guest review byMagda

Sunset is super beautiful. Hotel facility is not new but well cleaned. Gave us a free Margarita ticket for each. Stuff is very friendly and prepared beach chairs and a parasol kindly. Highstreet is down the road. You can find many gift shops and restaurants. I am sure you can find a cheaper hotel not next to the beach but worth to stay here to get all experience in Isla Mujeres.
