Rotorua is living proof of the magnificent, and sometimes mind-boggling, might of nature. Smoking hot springs, bubbling mud pools and fast-spouting geysers give the surrounding landscape an almost other-worldly feel.
This New Zealand city sits in the Waimangu Volcanic Valley, the world’s newest geothermal hotspot. It was created after the 1886 eruption that covered Te Wairoa Buried Village, between 2 of many lakes gracing this fertile terrain. By Lake Rotorua’s shores is the luxurious Polynesian Spa with its thermal pools. Just behind in Government Gardens are the city’s best cultural offerings: the Arts Village, Tamaki Maori Village and Rotorua Museum, in an elegant former bath house.
Native animals roam in Rainbow Springs Kiwi Wildlife Park below Mount Ngongotaha, accessible via the Skyline cable car. The views while ascending make it obvious why this is called the Bay of Plenty. Tikitere Thermal Park on the opposite side of the lake is known as Hell’s Gate, but as long as you can ignore the sulphuric smell, the spas are simply heavenly.
More springs are in Whakarewarewa Thermal Reserve, whose surrounding forest is popular for mountain biking, and Wai-O-Tapu where the Champagne Pool is a striking mix of green and orange.

We loved North Island, particularly Rotorua with many options around our main interests: Maori Culture and Nature. There is So much to see. Visit and Dinner at Mitai Village, also our Visit to Te Puia Thermal Park, the Maori Arts & Crafts Institute and Kiwi Conservation Centre were Fantastic! Also the Buried Village (june 1886) and a number of Beautiful Waterfalls! Also worth paying a visit to Patrick's Pies, absolutelly great pies that received many prizes! My grandchildren played in a annual New Zealand Maori League Rugby Tournament held in Rotorua over the weekend from 27/9/2025 & 28/9/2025 with teams locally, nationally and Internationally participating in this tournament which would've generated much needed revenue and tourism to local business hotels and motels in the area. Almost all hotels and motels had been booked out months in advance so to find avaliable accomodation at Rotorua Hostel for my family was a god send BUT to have my reservation cancelled the day of Our booking in was A Big Disappointment and to find other accomodation within budget at last minute was impossible. Redwoods Forest is a fantastic mountain biking destination. Make sure you go and have a drink at the Secret Spot next door afterwards. A great place to soak your feet or indulge in a spa. We are a family of four and had four nights in Rotarua. We loved it. We visited Hobbiton, many thermal geyser parks, Redwoods night walk and Secret Spot hot tubs. Plus the amazing Wai Ariki hot springs and spa. Need a car to travel here but it was fantastic.Guest review byLisaFiji

I didn't go to the breakfast so can't say anything about that. I particularly love the history, the colourful old world decor and charm, the lounge, and lovely staff - shout out to Kumar, a very sweet and helpful young man. I was happy to come back to this grand old dame, I am tired of soulless, bland, modern hotels.
