Our first visit to Madeira and our 10 night stay in Funchal was excellent. It exceeded our high expectations. The West and East full-day bus tours of the island were excellent, as was the 3 hour trip on the Santa Maria de Colombo, a replica Christopher Columbus sailing ship. The only one real "city" on Madeira, very lovely, green, excellent choice of places for breakfast and dinner. Prices are also better than everywhere on an island. The cable car and Monte park are exceptional. You would probably spend more time travelling around the island than in Funchal itself. While a lot of tourists come up here during the day, at breakfast and dinner Babosas is an oasis of peace and relax. The staff is friendly and welcoming, and very patient with those who do not speak Portuguese. The rooms are comfortable and quiet, the breakfast is rich and changes every day.
