History and Sandy Algarve Beaches
With a long and rich history, Lagos is nowadays a famous beach resort of the sunny Portuguese region of Algarve. Including wide sandy beaches and quiet coves enclosed by ochre cliffs, it also offers a lively city centre with one of the best mixes between history and modernity in the region.
King Henry the Navigator chose it as a base for his trips of discovery during the 15th century, and later on, it became the residence of the Algarve governors. The Old Town is circled by medieval walls, typical narrow streets, historic buildings and charming squares. Apart from being an important centre for sailing, the city has amazing beaches, like Meia Praia or Praia da Dona Ana. An excellent place with an interesting history, as is the case with all Faro cities, but what really stands out is how friendly the people are. The town is quiet and very safe. There are numerous nearby beaches with fantastic views, perfect for anyone who enjoys swimming. Transportation is convenient, with both buses and taxis connecting to other cities. Lagos is an interesting place with some real history and a vibe that makes it attractive to visitors. During our visits, we found good shops, bars, and restaurants. I don't know any other town with so many little places all interconnected with several small streets - you feel like discovering something new every few minutes! From the towns we visited (Faro, Albufeira, Portimao) I'm very happy we went to Lagos: it's nicer than Faro, less touristic than Albufeira and more interesting than Portimao. Everything's clean, most shops are driven by natives, and you have great food for reasonable prices. There's much nightlife, but it's not too excessive and within limits.Guest review byMiguelPortugal
