Sleepy small town by the river, relaxing if you come from a large city like BKK or VTE. Rent a bike and take a tour along the river. It was bigger than I thought it was.
It was bigger than I thought it was. Many temples further up in the mountains were definitely places to add to your list. I loved the views from the Mekong across to Laos, the markets in the town by the river, the night market by the station and of course all the temples were great to visit. My husband and I stayed the night in Nong Khai on the way from Bangkok to Vientiane and we're glad we did. We took the day train because we wanted to see some of the countryside. We didn't have a plan for crossing the border and getting to Vientiane so we chose to stay over night in Nong Khai - just enough time before noon checkout the next day to have a leisurely dinner, walk along the river, and consult our hosts on the easiest way to get to Vientiane. That turned out to be a taxi to the bridge, a bus across the bridge and a taxi to our hotel in Vientiane. Couldn't have been easier.Guest review byMaryUnited States - 10.0

Relaxed vibes.
Relaxed vibes. Several places serving great food and fun, busy energy on Walking Street when the market was on (with delicious food). Ease of access to Vientiane/Laos is great but it's worth staying in Nong Khai for a few days. Everything revolves around the Mekong River. Amazing views. Morning and sunset... Saturday is an absolute must for the Night Market. Opens around 4pm Awesome day market most days, starts early. Minutes away from Walking street night market, A.T.M./banks on Thanon Meechai, the very popular Dee-Dees restaurant, 7-11s and the Mae Khong promenade. Very friendly staff. The property looks like it has seen better days being one of the last remaining buildings from the old Pantawee hotel (the old main building now long gone). Tuk-tuks are omni-present (at the hotel itself and out on the main road) so getting around in a more rapid fashion is no problem if that is your preferred method of conveyance.Guest review byTERRYThailand
