This is a beautiful upmarket town, unspoiled by high rise buildings and bad planning decisions. This was the third time we had visited and it has never disappointed. Quaint houses and shops, clean streets and wonderful beaches. Plenty of on street parking and friendly people. Very pretty location with lots of boutique shops and variety of restaurants serving great food. Carmel beach is very beautiful but not for swimming in the sea due to the strong undercurrents. A beautiful but expensive city. The vibe is wine tasting, jewelry, art, designer clothing and restaurants with a beach nearby. The quality is good everywhere, with some exceptional locations. Carmel and the Monterey Peninsula provide one of California's most impressive gems. The natural beauty of the coast is unique, abundant and memorable. But be forewarned: Once upon a time, Carmel-by-the-Sea was the very picture of "rustic." That charm has morphed into what my partner has described, regarding downtown, as "an amusement park for Silicon Valley brahmins." Beautiful inside and out, and in the perfect location for exploring Carmel. We could see everything we wanted to by foot, including the beach (just prepare for the climb on the way back up!) and fairytale cottages. The breakfast was delicious, and the wine and nibbles every afternoon was a brilliant touch - we loved it and spent a few hours every day of our stay enjoying the wine in the sunshine.
