The facility was the best ‘value for money’ in the area. The free local buses meant we could go anywhere. No restaurant in this hotel but that was okay as we went elsewhere, no problem. I would HIGHLY recommend this place to anyone else travelling on a budget.

Honestly, we didn’t want to leave this place, it felt like home from the moment we arrived. The room is huge, with plenty of space and a cozy living area where you can truly relax. Everything was immaculate. The property is beautifully maintained, with a pool and a lovely terrace where you can enjoy a peaceful breakfast. We didn’t have much time to get to know the owners since they were out of town for most of our stay, but the few interactions we had were warm and friendly. The location is perfect. The property is in a quiet, family-friendly neighborhood just 10–15 minutes from downtown Hilo. At first, we were unsure about not being right in the city center, but honestly, you wouldn’t want to be once you see this place. It offers the best of both worlds: tranquility and easy access to town.

Amazing place run by lovely people. Owners have poured their heart and soul into this property. So much attention to detail. So spacious; loved all the timber and the handcrafting and decorating, the koi fishpond under the entry floor; each room has a different theme. Super comfy bed, and huge bathroom. Massive kitchen and loungeroom on each floor, with everything you need in a kitchen. They even have some snorkel gear you can borrow, which we did. Stunning views from the lanai and lounge area, and it's an easy drive from the town. I highly recommend this place and I would come back again. It really is 10/10.

the house was equipped with everything we needed - thank you for the nice welcome presents which we enjoyed. The house was very clean and the service +communication was fast, very friendly and excellent. We had the best time in Hilo and around. I LOVE Hilo!!! It still holds "The Essence of Hawaii." It is not overrun with tall modern buildings, and "Tacky Tourist Attractions." It maintains an Old Hawaii Charm. You're not overwhelmed with street performers and aggressive sales people trying to pull you into their cosmetics stores. Yet there are still some homeless people there which is not good. However, I feel very safe in Hilo. There are nearby beautiful gardens and great beaches! Hilo is surrounded by so much natural beauty. There are some great restaurants there as well. I really like all of them, and I make sure to have at least one dinner at Hilo Bay Cafe. I also always make sure to visit the Imiloa Astronomy Center by UH Hilo. It is an excellent place to learn about the history & culture of Hawaii. And their planetarium has amazing presentations!

Has the atmosphere of old Hawaii in the downtown, but it also has new and intriguing areas such as the University of Hawaii at Hilo and it's astronomy center. It also has access to Volcanoes National Park, which is an iconic park and sometimes volcanic eruptions to observe. It also has an extremely extensive farmers market with whole range of tropical fruits and vegetables.

The Hilo area is the wet side of the island but our 7 night stay resulted in late evening showers and only 1 semi-rainy day in mid-March. We were lucky. Hilo is old, funky, has a great Farmers' Market, and wonderful scenery. People are friendly and nice. Streets are clean and the flora lovely! As many folks say, it's Hawaii before tourists have overrun it and developers have built fancy hotels.

Don’t go to Hilo the first part of the month when all the retired and subsidized locals are cashing their government checks. Stores and restaurants are mobbed. Love the local waterfalls and Liliuokalani Gardens. There was a lot of traffic!

Hilo is green, walkable, laid-back, mostly attractive and has a lot of character, although some areas are in disrepair with closed shops. If you prefer grand hotels, sunnier weather, commercial tourism and private beaches, stay on the Kona side of the island. Hilo is island-style, and surrounded by waterfalls, botanical gardens and lush coasts with shorter drives to attractive spots. Great snorkeling at Carl Smith and Richardson Ocean Park.

Hilo is real Hawai'i, not a resort town.

Hilo is real Hawai'i, not a resort town. There are no white sandy beaches like the Kona side, although there are beaches, they are usually black rock beaches. The food scene is excellent however where most of your restaurants are locally owned and have all different types of food. Hilo is on the Windward side of Hawai'i Island so be prepared for rain. It's why it's so green there! Take a chance and experience Hawai'i Island like the Locals do. Respect the Locals and the place they call home.

The breakfast was fantastic...each day a new variety or combination of local fresh fruit, yogurt, egg, fresh bread, a juice and coffee. The room was cozy and had everything we needed and the grounds were filled with palm and fruit trees. It was a short walk to boiling pots and 10 minute drive to central Hilo and 50 minutes to Volcano National Park.

The Hilo Reeds Bay Hotel is an old hotel and could use some updates, but it is freshly painted and the rooms are clean. Five minutes to the airport and exceptionally affordable. The people who work there are friendly and accommodating.
