Jefferson was the destination for descendents of many very early (1600's) immigrants to America. People who founded Hartford, Connecticut, and established farms, churches, schools, cleared land, fought in the French and Indian War and American Revoution and then headed west to Schoharie County, NY in the late 1700-early 1800's. The people of the Jefferson Historical Society and the new Col. Stephen Judd Museum as well as the Maple Museum, are doing a magnificant job of preserving and sharing stories of these early settlers and their descendents while they and many others are looking to the future of this thriving small town USA community. Kindness and welcome abound here!

Jefferson is a very small town at the top of a mountain. There a a few lovely places to stay. The people are very friendly. I go to visit my brother, that’s how I know about it. If you want beautiful scenery and quiet it’s a great place to relax.

Jefferson is a quaint little town providing all the tranquility you could want while being close to any number of wedding and family reunion venues. My heartfelt recommendation is make a reservation early in Jefferson; otherwise you will be on the courtesy bus from the corporate hotel in Oneonta, 40 minutes away!

Really beautiful scenery, however the buildings are a bit worse for wear. Very close to some beautiful parks, waterfalls, and nature trails, however, as well as some nice day trip attractions-- Cooperstown, Howe Cavern, really anywhere in the Catskills. A couple of good shots to eat, but again there are plenty other options within a half hour drive as well. Over all, a decent, quiet central hub for a 3 - 5 day stay. I recommend eating at the Mill Pond Inn, Vasta's in Stamford, or Chappies in Roxbury. And definitely stay at Mill Pond Inn for accommodations!
