Getting its Rhythm Back
The home of jazz, intriguing New Orleans evokes images of Louis Armstrong, wrought-iron balconies and mouth-watering Cajun cuisine. Louisiana’s largest city, in the heart of the Deep South, the ‘Big Easy’ is being regenerated in the wake of devastating hurricane Katrina.
One area relatively unscathed was Bourbon Street – where jazz saxophones ring out of traditional bars interspersed by others offering more colourful nightlife. There are several New Orleans hotels near Bourbon Street, spread around the French Quarter with its distinctive Creole architecture.
To the south is Jackson Square, dominated by the Disney-esque St Louis Cathedral. Horses and carts wait patiently by the square, and locals set up their stools and start playing catchy tunes. Just behind is the legendary Mississippi River whose waters are still plied by paddle steamers.
From the river you get great views of the CBD skyscrapers and beside them is the huge Louisiana Superdome sports venue. Booking.com has several hotels near the Superdome, including some on Canal Street – a historic road where streetcars and the famous New Orleans Mardi Gras carnival pass down.
In the northern suburbs is New Orleans City Park, one of the oldest US parks and larger than NYC’s Central Park. Waterways lining it flow into large Lake Pontchartrain bordered by a bayou – the typical wetlands of the state.

New Orleans did not disappoint! We hit Washington Square, enjoyed a Steamboat Dinner, grabbed snacks from Kay’s Food Mart, and had an incredible meal at Mambo’s — and that’s just a few highlights. The list goes on! We had an absolute blast exploring the city’s energy, food, and music. Don’t drink the cocktails on the Natchez, they are lethal. French quarter not best place to stay if you are looking to sleep at night. It would have been better for me, from a personal point of view, to stay somewhere quieter and just visit the French quarter. The cars and sirens all night keep you awake then the boats on the Mississippi blow their horns from early in the morning, all through the morning it would see. There seemed to have lots of activities to do but all are scheduled in the PM. We will plan to stay longer next time to see more of New Orleans. At night, the street smelled like pee. Thank goodness it rained that night and washed away the street. Loved seeing lots of stores. Getting around New Orleans was a little tricky. It’s alright. Avoid Bourbon street. Lots of scams, prostitution, and thieves (according to locals). Julia and Magazine streets are quite high end. Royal street has some antiques. Frenchmen street has some decent live music that’s better than on Bourbon. Food is ok.Guest review byHENDRANetherlands
