I visited this town to see first hand what the situation was with regards to Orania. There is just so much noise about this town in SA (from certain quarters) and I wanted to see and hear for myself. I found the town enchanting. What has been achieved by this community of people is simply staggering. The folks that live their are super friendly and super proud of the community they have built - and so they should be. While I might not agree with everything about Orania, I will gladly visit this town again and I will defend their right to continue to live under the constitutionally protected right to self determination of the Afrikaaner culture and heritage. The place we stayed - Son Vanger was delightful and the steak I had at De Ouwe Hotel was one of the best I have ever had.

Go to the info office. Get on a free tour.

Go to the info office. Get on a free tour. Then enjoy the town and the people. Supper at Oewer Restaurant was amazing. The view of the rivier and sunset was awesome. There are a few other places to eat at. Top of the hill with bronze heads of previous SA leaders is a must and gives you a good view of the town. See the Koeksister monument and then buy the real thing at the Info Office. Soon you will see the statue of President Paul Kruger.

It was a most interesting visit.

It was a most interesting visit. Town folk very friendly and town itself, very neat and quiet except for the traffic going through the main road of the town. Big transporter trucks just are a noisy reality now a days! We had a delicious biltong pasta salad with lots of olives and feta cheese at 'Die Kantien' restaurant. The service was great, and we enjoyed a well-made Cafe Latte while we waited for our meal to be served which took about 20mins because it was freshly prepared - well worth the wait! It is very easy to get around Orania as the streets are well sign posted and there isn't a lot of traffic. The banks of the Orange River would be a good place to go and have a picnic, but we didn't do so as our time was limited. All in all, this was another good destination of many on our 4500km road trip!

Orania is a place you have to see and experience yourself, and while the lifestyle and way of life is not for everyone, we really respect the pioneering spirit and immense work that has gone into the town, and of all places in South Africa we can say hands down it is THE safest place to have a holiday with Orania being a very beautiful town, especially all the pecan nut trees and local shops

Great experience. People are so friendly and helpful.

Great experience. People are so friendly and helpful. The tour of the town was very informative. No need to dress up there. Relaxed and practical will do. If you don't know anyone there, go with friends. The grocery stores (2) have everything you need. Salad and fresh veg is not always available. It's all about spending quality time with family and friends. Take a good book and board games. They also have great afrikaans board games to buy and improve your general knowledge. Great place to escape the rat race and get down to basics. We are going back in June.
